CMU then had a male:female ratio of 3:1. This was the era when students from Chatham would say, "If you want a man, try CMU. The odds are good, but the goods are odd." "Pitt: Good academically, bad for your lungs." (Pittsburgh was still hella polluted.)

Pitt has been especially innovative in its approach to minority students. It even has one program funded by the University in which ten white and ten black students live together as an experiment in interracial living. The University lays out the bread. Good academically, bad for your lungs.

The most popular course is "Existentialism" taught by Rabbi Rubenstein. He "makes things real" and "talks in today's lan-guage." "Sex Education" is popular and taught by graduate students (how-to-do-it). This class always has to turn away hopeful students. David Montgomery of the History department and Myron Taube of the English department are popular professors.
Movement leaders among professors include Montgomery, David Houston and James Holland.
The best department is Philosophy—it's rated top nationally.
The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs studies the working of the community and participates in a lot of field

Minority recruitment is handled by the Black Recruitment and Admissions office. The effectiveness of this new organization can be judged by these figures. Blacks have increased substantially.

There is a great deal of independent study. All you have to do is find a professor willing to sponsor you. Some study abroad.
BREAD:
In-state is $355 per semester, out-of-state $830.
Some loans and scholarships; many campus jobs at $1.60-$1.90 an hour. Work-study obtained through the Student Aids Office.
Dorms cost $585 per semester for room and board. Apartments run $60 and up per person per month. Communes are about $50 per month and fraternities about $70 per month. Most students live in dorms and apartments.
Scrounging in the Pittsburgh area is difficult due to the Dow-Jones cost of living. Shady Side is a good area for freaks.
Most students walk or ride motorcycles. Only commuters drive.
Greeks and rich hips wear costly threads. Dates run $2-$3 for school flicks, a bottle of wine and a walk in Schenley Park. Free concerts at the Syria Mosque in Oakland. Flicks and dope are popular forms of entertainment.

Chatham is a secluded girls' school with an emphasis on studying during the week and finding a man on the weekends.
SERGEANT PEPPER SECTION:
600 chicks. 60% out-of-state. 40 blacks. Hard to get in. High-sually in upper two-fias of their casa, SATerid ACT requirero.
ACADEMIC BULLSHIT:
This is a small high-quality women's liberal arts college. There are no longer any breadth requirements here. Undergraduate
cal Science (relevant) and Biology. The largest departments have about five professors. Students at Chatham can take courses at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon.
Popular courses are Dr. Frank Lackner's "Abnormal Psychology" course (he relates things to sex and these broads eat it up), Dr.
Morrill's "Ethics and Modern Christian Thought" and Dr. Adel-man's "Cultural Anthropology."
Small stimulating classes which emphasize individual participa-tion. Pass/Fail, small classes, a small Black Studies department.
If a class is not relevant to the needs of the students, the chicks can walk out and stay out until the professor has restructured the class. If three students come to a department and request that a class be added, it must be done.
Chatham prides itself on the excellent communication between teachers and students. They discuss, rap and group together in an informal way.
BREAD:
Tuition is $1,500 a semester for all. Chatham insures that anyone who is admitted has enough money to make it through loans, scholarships or jobs. 40% receive aid-the other chicks are rich.
Many jobs.
Most students live in the dorms-they cost $620 per semester for room and board. Men are allowed to stay until 2:30 A.M. (but they stay on—and on-and on).
Chatham chicks wouldn't think of scrounging. Expensive wardrobes are wearing out. Most chicks get dates in the area but the pucker-face ones have to offer to go dutch. Flicks, drinking, smoking, going to the Pittsburgh Zoo and looking at the Westinghouse sign at night are popular forms …

4,912 students. 1,925 are out-of-state. About 160 minority stu-dents. Rather difficult to get in-about 1,200 combined SATs and upper two-fifths of high-school class. Drama majors are required to audition. Humanities applicants may send poems.
ACADEMIC BULLSHIT:
The Carnegie Institute of Technology (Engineering) recently merged with the Mellon Research Center. In addition to these pro-grams, the University includes a graduate school of Industrial Administration, a division of Humanities and Social Sciences, a College of Fine Arts and the Margaret Morrison Carnegie College for Women. Carnegie-Mellon has the nation's finest school of
Professor Alan Pinkus' psychology class is popular. Each major has such stiff requirements that you don't get to select many classes.
"All I can take are engineering courses, they aren't popular but I need them to graduate." Other top departments include Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Physics.
Average class size is 50, ambiguous Pass/Fail policy, not too much class participation except in drama. A few student-originated courses. A few courses related to ethnic groups. "C-Map" is the name of the minority recruitment program directed mostly at blacks. There are currently 90 black students.
Independent study is allowed as are self-determined majors. One such major is Radio and Communication which was put together by a student interested in broadcast work. He gets over half his credits for working for a local radio station. Most student-professor action is impersonal except in the Arts. Some study abroad.

The Democratic Socialists of America have been on a hot streak. Nationwide dissatisfaction on the left with hardline conservative policies — and with the mainline Democratic Party’s perceived inaction against them — has propelled ever more DSA candidates to the top of the ballot. The organization’s membership has also increased twentyfold since 2015 from 6,000 to 120,000.
Still, the DSA faces headwinds. Pittsburgh’s own DSA chapter got a reminder in mid-September when Carnegie Mellon University unilaterally canceled the org’s booking of an on-campus space for its annual convention. The convention went ahead as planned at a different venue..
