I think we have a tendency to assume most people share roughly the same moral positions and values as us, but that's just not true. I don't think cultures are more or less moral, but they're definitely *differently* moral.

in my own experience, different cultures also have wildly different attitudes towards cheating/dishonesty. it's perceived as very serious in some cultures and not a big deal in others. for example, I come from a culture with a very laissez-faire attitude towards bribery that is alien to westerners.

jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
possibly! one explanation I've seen is that the ownership are operating under very different cultural expectations about how the law binds them (ie, not at all) and what they're permitted to do (ie, whatever they like). I think that's quite likely.

I don't necessarily think the other clubs are more ethical than city, but I do think the potential consequences have been a more effective deterrent, at least. the most remarkable element of this whole thing isn't that city broke the rules - it's that they didn't seem to care about the consequences.
110
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
and then there's the difference in attitude. chelsea self-reported their breaches. everton and forest cooperated fully with investigators. city have dragged this out for years and fought at every turn well beyond what could be considered reasonable (refusing to turn over docs when ordered, etc).
110
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I think most clubs have been somewhere on that spectrum. chelsea, everton and nottingham forest have all been done for financial breaches in the last few years, for example. the difference here is partly the scale - almost a billion pounds is orders of magnitude beyond what other clubs have done.
110
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
there's a spectrum of behaviour here, from finding loopholes that are legally sound but ethically dodgy (super common) to breaking the law intentionally but fessing up when caught (pretty common) to intentionally cooking the books and lying about it (much less common).

the corporation in question has been posting through it on a truly industrial scale, so I can see why some people might be confused! but it's frustrating seeing sports journos who should know better repeating the fiction that because there's been an appeal, this decision isn't final
100
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
sure, but even in the US, final decisions remain in effect for the duration of the appeal unless stayed (or unless there's some statutory provision that the decision doesn't take effect until the end of the appeal window, I suppose)

why pay for school photos when, for the low, low price of feeding your own child's sensitive personal information to a machine that churns out child sexual exploitation imagery, you could get a bunch of photos of a creepy waxwork simulacrum of your child instead?

given that this happened in the UK, I'm not sure how that would apply
110
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
all of which is to say, it's totally fine to call this what it is - a finding of guilt - and to act accordingly. the legal effect of the decision as things stand right now is that city have been found guilty. they may overturn that on appeal (doubtful), but right now, they're guilty.
040
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
generally, a final decision remains in effect while an appeal process runs. sometimes, depending on the type of decision, it might be stayed for the duration of the appeal, or parties can apply for a stay, but those are the exception rather than the rule (where I live, anyway).
120
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
if final decisions weren't able to be considered final until every avenue of appeal had been exhausted, a) everyone would appeal to the highest possible extent all the time, and b) every legal proceeding would take years and years to resolve.
230
jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
lots of people acting like the man city decision isn't final because it can be appealed, but that's not how the law works. the decision is final - if it's overturned or amended on appeal, that would take effect retroactively, but it's not schrodinger's guilty verdict in the meantime.

jay, god's most perfect princex @jaythenerdkid.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
all I need to be happy is a little corner table in a quiet cafe that does a good chai latte and an unlimited supply of reading material about the man city verdict

I didn't really run into this until later in life because I grew up with/was educated by (fairly liberal) catholics. my first real exposure to evangelical protestants (or tradcaths) was at uni. not all muslims are raised in a more scholarly/questioning tradition, but I feel lucky that I was.

I wonder if it's because muslims do consider him a prophet and plenty of christians don't really understand the differences between islam and judaism? I've seen similar confusion around halal vs kosher.

first I heard of it was seeing the article on my tl. I don't listen to the radio and I'm usually wearing noise-cancelling earbuds when I'm at the mall or any other public place that might be playing music. unless my youtube music algorithm suggests it, I'm unlikely to hear it.

there's something so reassuring about when I need to be up early to run an errand but ryan doesn't and he's still asleep when I get home. like I'm just glad that even if one of us had to be up before noon, at least the other gets to enjoy a nice lil sleep-in for both of us 💜

for all that decades of copaganda has gotten a lot of mileage out of depicting lawyers as scummy (because anyone who routinely goes up against the police must be evil), law is an almost boringly ethical profession for the most part

did you ever watch elementary? it came out around the same time and is one of the most perfect procedural murder mystery shows ever made. I didn't realise how much I needed lucy liu to play watson until she did. it's also one of the best TV depictions of autism despite not mentioning it once

my version of this is the rum-based take on an old fashioned that I had at a bar in melbourne which was a) one of the richest and smoothest things I've ever drunk in my life and b) so potently alcoholic that I felt myself getting lightheaded as a single drop absorbed under my tongue
