There are a bunch of festival and book shop in conversation dates to come. You’ll find some of them in my Linktree in bio. but for now I’m heading home on the train from Manchester for a lie down and a some consecutive nights sleep in my own bed. 3/3

And an equally big thank you to the thousands of you who have joined me on the other dates in the past month, asked superb questions, laughed at my stupid jokes, shared their bacon sandwich sauce preferences, and bought a load of books. I never take any of it for granted, I really don’t. 2/3

Q has always been a get out of jail free card for the writers. (Apart from one episode - NG? Voyager - which dealt with the existential dread of being Q). And yes I write the restaurant column for the FT but I’ve written about many other things over the years.

In today’s @ft_weekend there’s a column by me about the writers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, screwing up season 4 by attempting to dispense with the format across almost every episode. Perhaps you liked the season. You are entitled to that view. You are also wrong. www.ft.com/content/b1d6...
A screen shot which reads:

In the finale of the latest series in the Star Trek universe, which dropped on Paramount+ just over a week ago, the crew of the Starship Enterprise boldly went where they have been many, many times before. There was a black hole, a time slip narrative, the birth of an alien baby and much more besides. For diehard Trek fans, among whose number I count myself, it was bliss, not least because the rest of season four of Strange New Worlds, a prequel to the original Star Trek of the 1960s, had been a complete bloody mess.A second screenshot which reads:

The majority of the 10 episodes were clumsy experiments with genre, breaking a robust format that has functioned perfectly well for the past six decades. One had a black-and-white film noir setting, with the Klingons as the Peter Lorre bad guys. In another, for reasons too convoluted to explain, the crew were in a soap opera and so behaving completely out of character. There was a fairy tale episode and a horror episode and a drugged-up episode (more character warping). Worst of all was the episode in which, through a transporter malfunction, all the characters were replaced by muppets apart from Spock.A third screenshot which reads:

Star Trek’s age-old mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, had apparently been forgotten by a writing team who at best seemed bored with the show’s premise, and at worst held both it and the fans in contempt. Complaints piled up across social media and elsewhere. As one said, “for god’s sake, just do Star Trek.” Amen to that. All we wanted was the show we know and love. It’s all the fans ever want.

I’ve hesitated over commenting on the Green Party’s anti-Zionism motion for fear of being called a genocidal monster. But the fear of antisemitism is a terrible reason for saying nothing. So Read this by @jonathanfreedland.bsky.social. It gets to the heart of it. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I am in a lovely hotel room In Belfast with no plugs next to the bed, and the most infuriating lighting system I have ever come across. Current status: in bed with the big light on, because you can’t turn on the table lamp by itself. Whoever designed this is a sociopath. Good night.

The @ftweekend.com has a new senior writer and it is @willoyd.bsky.social, who has opened his account with this brilliantly written piece of reporting, examining the UK’s resilience (or complete lack of it) in the face of multiple challenges. It’s very bloody good. www.ft.com/content/ba80...

As climate and geopolitical risks cast doubt on the UK’s ability to cope in a crisis, leaders are turning from ‘just in time’ to ‘just in case’ as a governing philosophy

For today’s @ftweekend.com I am at Kid, which is like a big opening for theatre critics: we all have to weigh in. My take: the food is as lovely as you would expect from Sertac Dirik, but don’t let the ineffably cool Soho setting convince you it’s more radical than it is. www.ft.com/content/7ac7...

I did a 5Live discussion show with him at the height of the Brexit debate, and he kept his eyes closed throughout his answers to why he opposed a second referendum. Wouldn't look at us. Wasn't pleased when I pointed this out to the listeners, who couldn't see what he was doing.

I was in Chester and the route to Wolverhampton curves briefly into wales (via Wrexham). Happily just coming into London now

Jay Rayner @jayrayner1.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
To complete this story, the first leg to Wolverhampton was fine. But the cross country to Reading was Dante’s 9th circle of hell: a standing room crush like the northern line at rush Hour. And so, to my dismay, I am now completing my journey by road which is what happens when transport fails.

People complaining about their train journeys are really annoying. So anyway, join me as what should be a couple of hours back from Chester becomes a five hour hoik through wales, into the West Midlands down to Reading and then to Paddington. Cos the London line is shut at MK. And yes I’m whining.
