2/2) Hubby always says dish reminds him of sòo-bah-kenn (素肉羹) he ate almost daily as kid. Likely cuz of starchiness of dish & dumpling texture. Also, my grandmother added bit of Worcestershire sauce to dish, so I use black vinegar which has similar taste. (Black vinegar is common kenn 羹 condiment.)

1/2) Made chick’n & dumplings (vegan) using Taiwan-grown stoneground wheat flour (from 十八麥/18 Wheat) for first time. Might have been coincidence, but without mentioning change in flour, family thought dumplings had a much richer, more complex, nutty flavor.

每次颱風來襲近年最常聽見一種說法,都說中央山脈是臺灣抵擋颱風的「護國神山」, 甚至在AI時代還看到有人將颱風跟中央山脈擬作成人準備進行搏鬥,但最讓我在意的, 反而是在這兩位對手之間,那個地區、那群人究竟有沒有被護到呢?

最上面已列出近十年(2016年至今)颱風造成花東地區的災情狀況,可以發現基本上只要有颱風來襲,便有很大的機率造成東部原鄉地區嚴重的災情,當西部歡喜於因山脈阻隔而減緩風雨的颱風假時,花蓮、台東或是許多山區原鄉卻往往正面承受颱風帶來的強風豪雨造成的土石流、道路中斷、農損、停電與家園毀壞,當我們輕易把中央山脈稱為「護國神山」時,也等於把原住民族與東部居民的災難經驗排除在外,我們真正需要被看見的是山的另一邊,有多少人正在承受風雨,拜託不要再說什麼護國神山了。

★ 2016年尼伯特颱風重創台東太麻里,造成屋頂掀飛、鐵皮屋倒塌、路樹傾倒、停水停電與嚴重農損;

★ 2016年莫蘭蒂颱風帶來豪雨,延平紅葉村及大武鄉一帶也面臨山崩與土石威脅;

★ 2017年尼莎、海棠颱風接連影響花東,強風吹垮花蓮和平電廠輸電鐵塔,引發供電危機;

★2021年圓規颱風外圍環流使花蓮山區部落(瑞穗、玉里)撤離,並造成停電與交通受阻。

★ 2023年杜蘇芮颱風帶來豪雨,花蓮秀林、富里山區出現土石流、河川暴漲與道路坍方;

Out of curiosity, asked husband if he’d seen any fresh pineapple hot pot on any menus (my 漢文 reading ability is embarrassingly poor) and he said it’s actually somewhat common these days, especially here in the parts of Taiwan where lots of pineapple is grown! Found photo online of a presentation

When we moved to our to Pingtung County, most of our village neighborhood was plots of land with gardens, trees and a few 三合院 with large green areas. Now, just a few years later all gone. Last remaining plot is currently under construction.

Oh even better! I’ll ask K if any students were singing it this year & if he happens to knows it. Last year, he was assigned a new 國一 /Jr. High Year 1 class for homeroom. Just up for elementary school, they were singing it & he told my mother when she was told him about the Batman smells version.

He tolerates it when I give him a bath, but as soon as he sees me getting his backpack out, he gets so excited knowing he’s going to the pet groomers. As soon as we get in the door, he can’t contain how happy he is to see them. He must have fun & they always send him home with a cute little bow on.

Was actually Pizza Huts, but had asked for no cheese—still came with evaporated milk & honey, so weren’t vegan anyways. I actually replicated & made a vegan version that we & our friends thought was pretty good (bourbon aged maple syrup might’ve been what made ‘em 😊 .) Sorry for poor quality pics.
