That’s a nice version. I’ve got the classic celluloid Pearl… And some of my coworkers can’t believe those are 80 years old pens, with the looks and the smooth lines.

Fountain pen of the day: A recent “homage” to the Montblanc 149, this is the Jinhao X169, a large and heavy pen in brass, with a red acrylic cover. It has a good and large steel nib and comes with a big capacity converter. It’s a nice pen overall, but I prefer the X159 in resin.
The Jinhao X169 a pen that copied the overall shape of the Montblanc 149, in brass and red acrylic cover. It has brass ends, a cap band with the with the brand and model and a clip. This pen is heavy and big, so perhaps it will be too much for some people. The same pen, uncapped with a very little plastic section and a big two toned steel medium nib, relatively smooth. It can post, but for many people it will be used more comfortably unposted.

Fountain pen of the day: (vintage) From the ancient time of 1994, this is the Parker Sonnet, in the Athenes model, a luxurious pen in electroplated gold and lacquer lines, with a smooth 18k gold nib with rhodium.
The Parker Sonnet, a medium sized pen in gold and black lacquer lines in a shape similar to a Greek column. The pen has a cap band in gold and the classic arrow clip. The same pen, uncapped, with a black resin section and a two tone 18k gold medium nib, with rhodium accents. The pen is comfortable to use and posts well.

Thanks! It really is. And it works perfectly, even at 89 years old.

As a substitute, I use a mix of 2/3 J. Herbin gris nuage and 1/3 of perle noir, since the gray ink is too clear.

It’s a pity Montblanc discontinued their Oyster Gray ink. It would have been a good color for the obsidian body. I don’t like amber inks very much, but it looked great on a demonstrator pen I saw.

Fountain pen of the day: (vintage) From the American company Wahl Eversharp, made in1935, this is the Doric Airliner, a very beautiful vacuum filler made of red and black celluloid, and a smooth 14k gold nib.
The Wahl Eversharp Doric Airliner, a medium sized fountain pen, faceted with gold plated cap band, clip and the brand logo on top. The pen has a vacuum filler system that carries a good amount of ink. It’s lightweight and has red and black celluloid (red wine shell is the name of this version). The same pen, uncapped with a 14k gold medium nib. It’s quite smooth and wet. It posts comfortably.

I found the Dracula too tacky for my taste. The obsidian one looks great, and the tiger is out of season, so I would go for the middle one. (Perhaps with the Pelikan pyrite ink, if the nib is broad enough) 🤷🏻‍♂️

There are many, from affordable Japanese models, like Preppy, Plaisir or Prefounte from Platinum, Kakuno or MR by Pilot, to many models from Hongdian that are quite good. Jinhao has some issues with QC, but they are cheap and work great when well made.

Fountain pen of the day: A matte black Pilot Capless, better known as the Vanishing Point. It’s still the best retractable fountain pen, considering that the second best are the Chinese “homages”. It’s a good looking piece with a black 18k gold nib. Not my favorite model, but it has a great price.
The Pilot Capless, a retractable pen in matte black, with a black 18k gold nib. It’s a well made model, relatively comfortable and very smooth. Also shown is the black box with a spare cartridge in a metallic cover.

You could go for a Platinum Preppy. It’s famous for having a special cap that prevents the nib for drying up.

It’s sad that people that uses arguments about new technologies don’t seem to realize how new technologies affect the lives of the people in both good and bad ways. Indeed writing affected the memory of the people. They were able to memorize the Iliad. Machines created great inequality and…

Fountain pen of the day: (vintage) In my search for vintage pens, sometimes I get lucky. From 1925, this is a Parker “D.Q.” (Duofold Quality) for women. It’s in a great shape, with the black permanite intact, with stripes and the body engraving . It uses a lucky curve filling system.
The Parker DQ, a black permanite (hard black rubber) women pen, with a ring on the cap instead of a clip. The pen is short, with a gold plated cap band. It has a blind cap that hides the button for the lucky curve filling system. The pen is in a perfect condition, with the stripes and the engraving on the body, that tells the brand, model, place of origin and patent. This model was made between 1924 and 1925.The same pen, uncapped with a 14k gold nib, with the legend “Lucky curve Parker 2” the nib is hard and smooth. It posts comfortably and is needed to use this pocket model.

I would like to have this as a gift, but spending that much money on something that obviously is a way for stores to get rid of the stuff they know will never sell is stupid. Simply put, if those were nice things, they would be selling them directly.

Fountain pen of the day, at last, I completed my collection of Pelikan Souveran, with the M600, in the Stresseman version, a gorgeous black, silver and gray stripes pen, with a very wet and smooth nib. Pelikan has some of the best luxury level pens at a good price, compared to Montblanc.
The Pelikan Souveran M605, in the Stresseman version with a silver clip and cap bands. The body has gray and black stripes. The photo shows also the box in gray with the brand name and logo in silver, a pen pouch in white vinyl and a bottle of Iroshisuku Take Sumí ink.The same pen, uncapped with a 14k gold rhodium coated medium bib, that writes as a broad, very smooth. The pen is lightweight and posts comfortably. With this pen, I now have the complete Souveran line: A red marble M200, a blue striped M405, a M605 Stresseman, a green striped M800 and a black M1000, from left to right. The same pens from the third photo, uncapped with a gold plated medium steel nib, a two tone 14k gold nib, medium, a rhodium coated 14 k gold nib, a larger two tone 18k gold medium nib and a big two toned 18k gold nib, medium.

I have a 2004 Omas Ogiva Cocktail and it’s a very nice pen. With Italian brands, Delta is quite good and gold nib pens from Aurora are great. Overall, though, they are beautiful but their quality isn’t as great, for the price.
010
Javier @javolabor.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
I agree. My worst duds came from Visconti, but, with the exception of Delta and Leonardo, the Italian brands in general had presented, for me, QC issues (even Montegrappa and Aurora). You can get either beautiful and expensive pens that are very enjoyable to use or beautiful and expensive crap.

Fountain pen of the day: From a very good Italian brand, this is the Leonardo Momento Magico. Its a comfortable and smooth all black pen, with a piston filler mechanism. I have heard some divergent opinions about this brand. Some consider it the best Italian pens, and some complain about the QC…
The Leonardo Momento Magico, a glossy black pen with conical ends and black metal trims. It has a nice texture and appearance. In the photo is included the blue box with the brand name and the model. The pen has a little plastic medallion with the brand logo. The same pen, uncapped, with a fine black steel nib. It also shows the ink window. The pen is comfortable to use posted and the nib is very smooth.

Really you can have any fountain pen. The real trick is to write in a way that your hand doesn’t smears the ink. Really easy, in fact. Inks dry almost instantly when you use medium or fine nibs, or you turn a little the paper, so your hand rests on the lines you already wrote.

Javier @javolabor.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
It’s a decent model. The nib writes well and the ebonite feed does a good job. I don’t remember that it has an inner cap, but the ebonite helps to keep the ink flowing… It’s also cheap, so, while I would recommend other better pens, this does a good job.

Javier @javolabor.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
I guess you need a pen in a more durable material, but not very expensive. My choices would be the Pilot Metropolitan, the Hongdian Black Forest or the Kaweko Perkeo. The Preppy is a very good pen, but you have to handle it with care. They aren’t made to last.
110
Javier @javolabor.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
That’s a pity, but they also have pens in ebonite and now in copper, brass, aluminum and ultem…

I personally like Ranga pens. Also I would love to try a Lotus or a Vazir. Some people love their Magna Carta, vut I’ve heard many complaints about their quality…

Fountain pen of the day: Although recently I finished sharing my collection, one of the good things is that there’s space for growth. My last addition is a Kanwrite Emperor, an economical flex nib from India. It’s a good looking piece with a really good nib, even if it’s a little on the heavy side.
The Kanwrite Emperors, a brass pen in black with chrome trims. The clip has the brand name and the model name printed on the cap. Also shown, a blue cardboard box with the brand name and logo in golden letters. The same pen, uncapped with a metallic section that is a little slippery and a good steel flex nib. Overall, it’s a nice pen for the price, but with the slippery section and the weight, it can be uncomfortable for some people.

You can go for a nice Hongdian N11 or a Black Forest. Jinhao also has some recent good models. A Kaweko Perkeo or a Student are good choices. A Lamy Studio. Good Italian pens are more expensive than €75. A Platinum Procyon, a Sailor Tuzu or a Pilot Prera could work.

Javier @javolabor.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Feels a little weird, because it looks like wood, so it should be lighter, but it really feels heavier. Perhaps for being smooth. The nib is as good as always, though.

Fountain pen of the day: I recently received this one, a Diplomat Aero Black Forest, an aluminum pen with a wood like cover. It’s a little heavy, with a superb nib in a cool design.
The Diplomat Aero, perhaps the best design of this German brand, in a cigar shape, inspired by the zeppelin. It’s al aluminum, with a wood design. It has a dark metal clip, and the cap has engraved in white the brand and country. Also included in the photo is the box in metal with the brand name and logo in black letters. The same pen, uncapped with a long metallic section and a number six steel medium nib. Diplomat do very smooth nibs that are a pleasure to use. And although the pen is heavier than it looks, is well balanced and comfortable. It posts well, but can be too heavy for some people.

The thing about perfect competition? Is as real as anything perfect. The clue is the word competition and what happens when a competitor wins. Also, the costs of transaction (it won’t be cheap to change service) operate in favor of the company. Classic oligopoly Yep. Predatory capitalism in action.
