It may be the cold medication talking, but I think I've found my hidden Markov model example for my new lecture.

Since 2021, HPAI outbreaks have affected unprecedented amounts of bird and mammal species throughout the world. In a new study @jappliedecology.bsky.social we show how to quantify these demographic impacts—and reveal severe effects on an atypical host: the peregrine falcon. doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Evaluating the demographic impacts of the highly pathogenic avian influenza panzootic
Our findings demonstrate that the HPAIV panzootic can cause rapid and long-lasting impacts on the dynamics of long-lived species. This raises major concerns for the conservation and long-term viabili....

The Peregrine Falcon is already challenged by persistent and emerging threats. And yet, this week, it could be downlisted to CITES Appendix II, reducing safeguards against commercial trade. We show why this is a bad idea in our new letter @animalconserv.bsky.social 👇 doi.org/10.1111/acv....

To estimate survival, a key parameter in population dynamics, ecologists use different statistical models to account for imperfect detection of living and dead individuals. M. Schaub and @jaumebadiaboher.bsky.social studied the performance of these models. Read more here: doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

1°C of global warming does NOT mean that heatwaves 'just' get hotter by 1°C. Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4°C warmer, with worse consequences for people and ecosystems.

Jaume Badia-Boher et al. used a spatially explicit IPM to assess the long term dynamics of the Bonelli's eagle population. Results showed that the magnitude of birth and death processes was substantially larger than that of emigration and immigration processes. More on doi.org/10.1002/eap.....

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.
I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Statistical Rethinking was this book that made a difference in my career. I started my PhD knowing little about stats (as almost every ecologist). The book and the lectures are made in a way one can understand stats from its base and deepen into the world of Bayes. I couldn't recommend them more.

Really nice looking postion open here at SLU Sweden: Professor (fully tenured) in conservation ecology with focus on biodiversity linked to forest management & green infrastructure. It is also at our Alnarp campus which is...well...rather nice & even has a castle! 🧪🌎 www.slu.se/en/about-slu...
A green lawn stretches towards an old castl, three wings of the castle can be seen with multiple arched entries and at leasted 4 levels of whindows. Two large sections of the castle walls are covered with green vine with leaves or red vine with red or orange leaves. This is the opposite side of the castle in the previous picture. Here three distinct 'towers' cant be see with two sections of building between them. This side of the case appears to only have one entrance and the sections between the towers are covered in thick green foilage with the exception of the 12 windows in each section spread over three floors.
