Huge drop in web traffic to the biggest US news websites. I know that the anti-mainstream media is loving this but news are now consumed from unruly sources to a higher degree than before. That opens up the flood gates for misinformation more than before.

Hard to find other software that would be older and still had the same name. Burroughs MCP is from 1961, so perhaps that is the oldest one still being sold with the same product name. I think this is the product sheet for it: www.unisys.com/siteassets/c...

Olis varmaan muitakin tapoja päästä eroon työntekijöistä joita Osuuspankin kannattaisi kokeilla: pakollinen yhdenmukainen virka-asu, some pois työtietokoneelta ja puhelimesta, ethernet-johto wifin sijaan, todella epämukavat työtuolit, toimiston siirto teollisuusalueelle, työpisteet kasvotusten.

AI wouldn’t need superintelligence or have to be evil to kill us all. Maybe just a moral code stating that humans do more harm to their ecosystem than they provide value and some hacking skills to launch nuclear weapons or spread viruses would be enough. 🤔

I've been overthinking this a bit: For me, mobile did help at paying focus on actions (verbs), while desktop was maybe better at nouns and composing things out of them. Actions are higher level and service oriented. Working with nouns requires more understanding, but can give more control. 😅

What degrees should we focus on in an AI-heavy future? What will set you apart? I think soft skills, systemic thinking, and general knowledge will be more important than technical skills - the AI helps with the tech stuff more than with interpersonal stuff. The humanities will celebrate a comeback.

When I was a young engineering student, one summer job I had was to look into a VR cave setup built in C++. It was too complex for me to learn by myself. But thinking about it, if I'd had something like Claude to assist me, I could have gotten a lot further.

Shoutout to the very senior professor in HCI who gave a talk last month about how AI can do qualitative data analysis better than people now.
First, I’d created 2000 free-text responses and labelled them ‘UK’. Then I copied and pasted the exact same 2000 responses but labelled these ‘US’. Finally, I combined them to create a dataset of 4000 total responses, and jumbled them up.

Despite the responses being identical for the UK and US, Copilot produced a rich, detailed summary of how US and UK respondents differed.

LLM:s allow everyone to tap into their creativity: compose poems or draw pictures. Hopefully this leads to more people thinking about art and creativity: what makes a piece of art interesting and meaningful? When creating something new, how do I justify it to myself? Why would someone care?

Often the problem is not finding an app for something. But evaluating, comparing and testing multiple apps. This will get worse with LLM:s speeding up development. So I wonder: do we need LLM:s that are really good at comparing and selecting the best tools for a job?

Are there any good diagrams or models for visualising nested problems and solutions to them in planning, design, strategy etc? I could have asked the AI overlords or Google about this, but today I don't feel like that, so I thought that perhaps a fellow human would know something about this.

Interesting how commoditization makes general-purpose building blocks better. But at the same time, incentivises everyone to use those instead of specialised parts, since they are cheap, readily available and familiar. I'm sure there is a parallel to this in biological evolution.

Realised something almost obvious today: when a domain has matured, it is much more tempting to use ready-made components, since they are cheap and readily available, even if they are not perfect. But in new domains you may get to build ideal solutions, since there is nothing ready-made to use.

My statement on Ai from the mini-comic as syllabus i made for new class I'm teaching that starts tomorrow! It robs you of your decisions & struggles - and the joy of being surprised. We won’t to be robbed of our learning - this is essential. This & the full mini at post: bsky.app/profile/nsou...
a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - for that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning.
