it’s not easy Alice, this fellow sounds like a ball of jealousy and misogyny wrapped in biitter rage. My daughter loves everything you do, so I’m buying it for her but will likely pinch it back to read first. Keep up the good work! ps she failed regional anatomy @ UoB by 0.075% - asked to leave! :-(

Morning Martin, have you heard the news that that the govt is to decouple energy costs from the price of gas (through the deeply flawed marginal pricing system). Ed Milliband discussed it this morning and mentioned that Rachel Reeves would announce the detail later today. Have you seen the proposal?

That is so unspeakably sad. Your country has endured insufferable pain - justice will, in time, prevail.

It leaves us stuck in a “gas trap” paying global-crisis inflated prices for British wind and sunshine.

The UK doesn’t price power on the average cost, but on the cost of the last element of the energy mix, almost always gas. Gas makes only about 30% of our power, but it sets the price around 98% of the time. When gas prices soar, so do everyone’s electricity bills, even for wind and solar.

The Result: When global gas prices spike, electricity bills rocket instantly, even if the wind is blowing and the sun is shining.

Key Facts: The System: Known as the "Merit Order" or "Pay‑as‑Clear" model. The Flaw: All generators — even cheap renewables — get paid the same rate as the most expensive generator used at that moment (usually gas).

jasonsclark.bsky.social @jasonsclark.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
And crucially — gas is traded on international markets, so UK production makes no real difference to what we pay. Even if we produced enough gas to meet all our needs, the price wouldn’t fall, because it’s set by global supply and demand, not local output.

The "Gas Trap" We are stuck in a 'gas trap': gas only generates about 30% of our power, but under the marginal pricing system, it sets the wholesale price 98% of the time. We’re paying Putin‑inflated prices for British wind and sunshine.

jasonsclark.bsky.social @jasonsclark.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
The "Last One In" Rule: UK energy isn't priced on average cost, but on the marginal cost, the price of the very last unit of power needed to keep the lights on. Since expensive gas is almost always that 'last unit,' it acts as a price floor that drags up the cost of every wind and solar farm.

jasonsclark.bsky.social @jasonsclark.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
"Shopping Basket" Analogy: Our energy market works like a supermarket where if you buy a bottle of vintage champagne and a pint of milk, the shop charges you champagne prices for both. Because we still need some gas to meet peak demand, its sky‑high cost sets the price for the cheap renewables too.

I don't think our politicians or media understand energy pricing and the impact it continues to have on the cost of living crisis. Ending marginal pricing could slash consumer bills and save business and industry a fortune.

I have Scottish chums who are worried that the ESTA application requirement, re entry to the USA, to notify the authorities of their social media profiles, will mean that they’ll be refused entry for the World Cup because of their postings about Trump. Thoughts…?

Gas plants sell power in a flexible, short-run balancing market. Consumer-facing prices reflect cheaper renewable/nuclear power instead of being set by gas. Impact: ✔ Could lower wholesale prices by 20–40% because gas no longer sets the clearing price. ✔ Encourages investment in low-carbon power.

1. Split the Market (Electricity Market Split / Market Zoning / Two-Market System) Separate “firm/cheap” generation (renewables, nuclear) from “variable/expensive” gas generation. How it works Low-marginal-cost generators (wind, solar, nuclear, hydro) sell power in a long-term, fixed-price market.

What about addressing marginal cost pricing in the energy market Dale? That would curb inflation, ease household finances and encourage growth, in due course increasing the tax take and improving public finances?
