No. This is bad but fun, while Nemesis is just insultingly bad. As we will no doubt discuss tomorrow....

It's a weird one. The bit I can never quite make work is when it is revealed that the Son'a, who have ships way bigger than the Enterprise and conquered two entire races and made them servants, were basically a few stroppy teenagers from the Ba'ku planet. How did they do all this?!

Another TNG moment that stuck in my memory from its original showing on BBC2. #StarTrek60 #TrekMoments

When I saw it in the cinema it was scary but had genuine laugh out loud moments. I loved it then and love it now.

And no, Worf’s line about the Moon obscuring their warp signature doesn’t explain how they missed a 700 meter long, 26 or 24 deck starship in the system!

So, somehow, despite years of detecting ships in orbit of planets from some distance away, the Vulcans failed to spot a Sovereign class ship or the firing of four quantum torpedoes which were all *right next to* the thing that generated the warp signature that prompted their visit to Earth?!

This is sure to be fun, informative, entertaining and fascinating. And I’m in it! Raging impostor syndrome but looking forward to it nonetheless! Hope to see many of you there.

I love that this high budget sci-fi action adventure movie has a climax involving Patrick Stewart climbing and hanging from very recognisable Dyson vacuum cleaner hoses! In the cinema I laughed because they didn’t even disguise the attachment end!

Another bit that annoys scientist Jason: ‘organic’ is not synonymous with ‘living’. Clothing and carpet fibres are organic material that should also have been dissolved. (And yes, years of seeing ‘organic food’ labels in supermarkets also annoys the crap out of me!)

Ok, maybe the missiles of tje future had more power but if that was so they are a) grossly overpowered for a warhead delivery system and b) would have needed stronger tankage than the Titan had.

It reflects the genuine historical irony that the first manned peaceful exploration of space did indeed use repurposed nuke launchers, but they were at the limit of their payload getting a tiny spacecraft into orbit. Something like the Phoenix would have needed a launcher more like a Saturn V.

As a space nut it always bothered me that they used what is recognisably a Titan missile, because I know that thing didn’t have the capacity to get the Phoenix into orbit. Not are the spark throwers under the engines used on a rocket of that type.

It’s so clumsy and contrived that he has to pick up the phaser and swing it around to smash something that’s behind him! Why not have him stay where he was and hurl it on his first ‘no’? It doesn’t help that the model of the D that Lily picks up very visibly was not broken in the smash either.

This scene is the one part where I think the writing and direction just fail. Picard’s stuff about the Brog invading and assimilating entire worlds while Starfleet falls back bears no resemblance to any Borg storyline we’ve seen, and his big ‘NOOOOO’ and smashing the display cabinet is pure narm.

I wasn’t keen on the E when I saw the first pictures of it in the publicity and tie-in stuff but seeing it properly on screen I loved it.

Oh lord, yes! Even with the shields compromised (ignoring the obvious fix they'd used so often before), a galaxy class ship with multiple phaser banks with direct line of sight in any orientation should have been able to rain fire down on one Bird of Prey and take it out easily!

Contrast with every first appearance of the Enterprise E in the next three movies being a gorgeous 'sweeping across the screen' shot accompanied by the main theme....

They had a thing for meaningless deaths in that era. Yar and Jadzia seems to be a misogynistic reaction to an actress pushing back on some shoddy treatment, but that they tried it with Kirk really does beggar belief. Dying in a dangerous effort to get a vital thing to save the world is way better.

One thing that always jumps out at me when I watch this movie: the instant tanning effect of Veridian III! Stewart especially but noticeably Shatner and McDowell too are much more bronzed than in any of the studio sequences.

One thing I do rather like is that the core breach sequence is very similar to the one from Yesterday's Enterprise, with the same big opening panel, Geordi in the foreground as it explodes behind him, coolant leak, etc. A nice bit of continuity.

"They'll have two seconds of vulnerability..." "Prepare a spread of photon torpedoes, we have to hit them the instant they begin to cloak." "We are cloaking! Our shields are down!" ... "Fire" (ONE torpedo gets fired) ... ... ... (Around 20 seconds later) BANG!

Seven years of remodulating shields to deal with space phenomena, Borg attacks, and more besides, and not one bloody person this time says, 'hey, maybe if we remodulate our shields they'll stop those Klingon weapons like they're supposed to'?!

It's not even the planet they go to! I mean, the planet's population was given as 230 million. That's easily plenty sparse enough that everything could have taken place without ever encountering a single inhabitant.

Or that putting cheap hologram sticky tape around the edges of the photos in the album was a perfect was to say 'look, we're in the future guys'? Does Picard really seem like a guy who would stick photos into albums that way?!
010
Jason Thompson, Exemplar of Enjoyable Pedantry @jasonjtt.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Such a dull cliche. There were so many options for having Picard directly confronted with his mortality and they fell back on the old 'ooh, everyone regrets not having children' crap.

It's a real mess, caught between 'introduce this to new viewers' and 'most will have been watching TNG the whole time anyway'.

Absolutely! The tiger reacted as one should expect when confronted with someone unexpectedly in its enclosure. It should reflect the tiger defending itself. It shouldn’t be a few lines in before we find it was the man putting himself at risk.

Also, the 'it grows backwards through time but the future Enterprise can still go back and see it forming later than when they first fired the beam that supposedly made it form', so when did it start going backwards?

We've only ever encountered a single Borg vessel at a time before, and that has been enough to almost wipe the floor with Starfleet each time, so when Harry's reporting on the number of vessels detected approaching the lone USS Voyager keeps rising, well.... #StarTrek60 #TrekMoments

Star Trek’s usual allegorical storytelling breaks down here. A forced relocation storyline with all subtlety stripped away by making the colonists actual native Americans from Earth.

Yes, you'd think this question would have been addressed when Data first entered the academy, but Picard's dismantling of Maddox's argument about sentience is superb. one of the episodes that stayed with me after first viewing. #StarTrek60 #TrekMoments

I can't believe it only recently occurred to me what else made this one so impactful: there was no guarantee there would be any more Star Trek. The idea of an Enterprise A wasn't a thing. While now we expect the destruction to be followed by a new ship, this really could have been the end.

It’s one of my pet peeves when writers forget a sequence is supposed to be all from one person’s perspective, or in a faked environment, and still include other character interactions when they’re not there, or show exterior shots, or do it deliberately as a cheat.

Indeed, Starfleet’s abysmal health and safety strikes again. I can understand workstations in there to a point (maintenance and testing in a starbase, for instance) but surely there should be some kind of interlock that absolutely prevents anyone going in when the warp drive is active?!

Kirk made a mistake that undoubtedly cost lives and gave Khan a chance for a near-crippling first strike, but then he shows why he's such a respected officer in Starfleet, immediately finding his window and striking back. #StarTrek60 #TrekMoments
