Language about AI is inextricably bound up with what we allow AI to do or be responsible for. Thus, while it might very well do something quite analogous to thinking or understanding—hence why I kinda agree with the OP—I think the better ethical outcome is the slew of non-anthro terms.

tell them it is something that doesn’t know what a word is bc I think it will lead to better outcomes for them. They’ll use it less and better they will *trust* it less. Because the way AI destroys us is if most normies move to think it is just OBVIOUS that AI knows and give it way too much trust.

I tell my students AI can’t “understand” or “think” not because an AI is the most elaborate Chinese Room ever constructed or bc there will never be “something it’s like to be ChatGPT” and thus it lacks the mental state required for understanding and thinking. I think all of that is the case. But I

Im anti AI but *kinda* agree and @opinionhaver.bsky.social is also right that the main question is about what AI can *do* not what it is. AND YET, I think we’re underestimating the degree to which so many of the awful AI outcomes are wrapped up in whether most ppl think of AI as a fellow knower.

But are we sure AI can even have the sort of metacognitive ability to have a final goal? Knowing what your ultimate aim is on top of managing intermediate tasks feels more like assigning a kind of mental state I’m not sure AI can do. Am I totally off base?
