Setting this down over here for reviewer two.

This is one of my dinner party "oh, no, he's on that again" topics. Marc Racicot argued this well before the SCOTUS when MT lost a house seat 30+ years ago.

Easy for me to say after 4 kids (still a 5yo at home), but it doesn't feel like it in the moment. In the fray it just sucks. My advisor's advice was that if you don't compare yourself to other scholars you'll survive it.

Why, yes, I actually do want to miss it.

000

Jason H. Dormady @jasonhdormady.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

but it wasn't me. Figuring out what kind of writer I was lowered the disappointment I felt when writing got interrupted because I was no longer upset with myself and displacing it on others for "interrupting me." Perfectionism is the mind and family killer, for me.

... frustrated I missed writing today, but that doesn't decrease my love for (person x)" or "I can write next week, but sharing (milestone x) will never happen again." I guess the other thing I embraced was that I am a garbage first-draft writer. I tried to be a bleeder (agonizing over every word)

Jason H. Dormady @jasonhdormady.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

It doesn't matter how you write, just that you know your pattern and work with your family to build it into the routine. Once you know you, it is important to communicate that. Still, make peace that the adult routine has to be flexible in the face of the reality of tiny humans. "I feel ...

Jason H. Dormady @jasonhdormady.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

The other thing I would say is that you have to be honest about what kind of writer you are. I'm an exploder: I can sit down and explode 5000 to 8000 words and then walk away for weeks because my attention has to go elsewhere. I worked out a schedule with my partner using that as a guide.

Jason H. Dormady @jasonhdormady.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Oof. I have 4 kids. I take one day off a week so my other 6 days aren't an agony. Early career: I got up early. Then did morning with family. Then off to work. Home to make dinner and with fam to kid bed time. Then back to office. Home by 10:30. Also, summer.

Sort of... it is a 475 year old tradition, not an unbroken line of continuous incorporation. Lots of reorganizations, purges, and closures in the colonial era and - closed from 1865 to 1910.

I'm a farm laborer who became a designer and a designer who became a History professor. My cohort at UCSB was full of people from k-12, tech, media, clergy, military, and service labor retraining as historians. Shoot, at 27 I was one of the youngest (the cohort after me was a different story).

If Emanuel gets the nomination there are a lot of folks who will stay home. He's hoping that he can ride "vote blue no matter who," his connections, and his fundraising network into power. Or, maybe he's just a stalking horse.

To add context: One guy running the archive of Mexico's second largest city on a collection covering 470 years, no finding aids for post 1890, and the patron was from a church with a history of stealing records.

I watched an archivist tell a guy that no records on that topic existed. I was sitting 10 feet away reading exactly the documents the other dude wanted, but the patron was being a jerk and the archivist was not having it.

When you go to research, tell everybody what you are working on or at least that you are a historian. Janitors, taco vendors, beach bums, archivists, receptionists, historians, students, people at church... somebody has a box of letters or pictures they want to show you. Above all, be polite.

If you are not familiar with ADABI, look them up. They have saved hundreds of smaller civil and church archives in Mexico. I used them for the church archives in Tepalcingo, Morelos, and the organization and quality was wonderful. #history #Academicsky #méxico #MX #Archives adabi.org.mx
