This is a fascinating rabbit hole. How does someone decide how much learning is enough? What’s worth reading an article or taking a class v just a google search or an LLM prompt? Wait… those last two are essentially the same thing now.

@ibogost.com Thank you for writing the AI coding article. As a K-12 CS teacher, I have a couple of questions after reading: How do you think intro programming instruction should change in light of AI tools? Would you be willing to share the syllabus/ reading list for Retro Game Design?

I get how that matters with a literature class, but I’m not sure about something like calculus.

Do you think concurrent enrollment maintains the college course integrity, or does teaching the class in the high school with K-12 faculty turn it into just an accelerated HS class?

This depends so much on the question “who’s paying?” If you can stay 8 semesters, dual enrollment and AP can open the door to a double major or to completion of an engineering or similar major without extra semesters.

This doesn’t help much when a lot of U.S. cities have fairly poor public transit systems and are, for the most part, not very walkable.

But I think they then say to reseason. I’ve been waiting for months for it to not be 95 degrees so I can reseason my Lodge skillet.

I wish @kairyssdal.bsky.social knew someone who could tell us if the numbers in this article make sense and add up. AI training costs as 1/10 of the global economy feels like a ridiculous figure.

The other effect of “family first” thinking is to vastly reduce the social circle to whom you are morally obligated. See Margaret Thatcher’s “There is no such thing as society….there are families.”

At the center of my message to faculty yesterday was: 1.) We may not be adequately prepared for how angry students are about tech. 2.) They are not all angry for the same reasons. 3.) Being angry at it doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. The sense of entrapment fuels the anger.

If you go back far enough to the Middle Ages, universities were sort of a “coven of professors.” Did that change when the government started operating universities, or was there some other precipitating event?

I think about this point by Adorno so often of late.
My thesis about this would be that all
humans deep down, whether they admit this or not, know that it
would be possible or it could be different. Not only could they live
without hunger and probably without anxiety, but they could also
live as free human beings. At the same time, the social apparatus has
hardened itself against people, and thus, whatever appears before
their eyes all over the world as attainable possibility, as the evident
possibility of fulfillment, presents itself to them as radically impossible. And when people universally say today what was once reserved
only for philistines in more harmless times, "Oh, that's just utopian;
oh, that's possible only in the land of Cockaigne. Basically that
shouldn't be like that at all," then I would say that this is due to the
situation compelling people to master the contradiction between the
evident possibility offulfillment and the just as evident impossibility
offulfillment only in this way, compelling them to identify themselves
with this impossibility and to make this impossibility into their own
affair. In other words, to use Freud, they "identify themselves with
the aggressor" and say that this should not be, whereby they feel that
it is precisely this that should be, but they are prevented from attaining
it by a wicked spell cast over the world.

I hope Anglicanism is a big enough tent for all of the above. I do wonder if Eucharist by default and the aesthetic are what make Episcopal worship feel different from other mainline traditions. I say this as someone raised United Methodist.

You need to take up a period appropriate instrument and join the baroque dance band. Beautiful music ✔️ Costuming ✔️ Complex notation ( turns, trills, etc.) ✔️

Beyond the messages society sends about the purpose of education, there’s the pervasive expectation that being thoughtful and/or well read is uncool and pedantic.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

What people miss is that Musk, Waltons, or anyone with that kind of money is a de facto political actor because they can self fund a project (like a medical school) that would otherwise be a political decision.

I’ve seen the film and read the review. My sense is that she had expectations of fidelity to the Homeric text that made her want a very different film than what Nolan made. Some of those would, I think, be interesting films, but they were never going to be this film.

I think it’s important to recognize that there’s a subset of the population for whom “Women must be protected from men” is a pillar of their (not just sports) worldview. They won’t be persuaded by evidence about sports because the belief isn’t about sports, but about how the world was designed.
