Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2026New data centers use a closed loop system. They do use the water, and any remaining is returned to city treatment, same as the rest. 100
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2026This is a falsely framed story Brent. The water in question was the amount used during construction (same if it was something else), & was because of a water meter billing error. It wasn’t tied to any pressure issues, and the county water service confirmed their usage is less than 1% of the total. 010
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2026The efficiency of their trucks compared to ours is something. 110
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 30/06/2026This is also worth a read. Reality is demand side needs reforms too. 111
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 30/06/2026Positing an example from Europe earns an immediate eye roll and a complete end of any attention/interest. In fact if you want them to not do something, suggest it’s common in Europe. 210

Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 30/06/2026Broken procurement process and a love for big, custom trucks. And then code bodies codifying bigger streets, etc to accomodate their bloat vs constraining it. There is also an inherent believe bigger and more somehow equates to safety. 120
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 30/06/2026Cars get a pass because firefighters are driving in to work in trucks. 020
Reposted by Jason CoxKent Lind @camasonian.bsky.social · 29/06/2026But in the history of the US, no fire chief has ever showed up at a public meeting to oppose on-street parking. Which DRASTICALLY curtails access far more than bike lanes. In fact wide bike lanes are perfect for emergency vehicle access. 2184
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026This likely means narrower lanes - also unacceptable. (While safer, they’re irritating when driving a 102” wide truck fast) Fire deaths for each will be equal. Road deaths will be greater on the left one, but they don’t count in life safety. Nor do other benefits, since they aren’t fire-related. 2270
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026A U.S. fire chief will show up at a public meeting proposing this & call it an unacceptable public safety hazard. That the trees impede fire response. As does that bike lane. The bus lane will cause an increase in response times & untold deaths, despite being able to be used as an emergency lane. 1427349
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Yep. If the aesthetic isn’t 1990s Backdraft they don’t want it. 050
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Was there any video or transcripts of this meeting? I seem to recall you replying to me in another post with a link to someone’s comments or so on but cannot find (or don’t know how to use search over here properly yet) 100
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026This is in fact not the top priority in many cases when it comes to American fire departments. “Tradition, pride, history, honor, patriotism.” No facts at this time please. 130
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 29/06/2026“Yeah but European fire helmets are stupid looking” An actual reason American firefighters will say the first example here is better. Just before then telling me a 10 second delay in response speed from safer streets will kill people. 2517
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Related: “The limiting factor often isn’t EMS response it’s that many cardiac arrests are already several minutes old before anyone knows they’ve happened. For the arrests that are witnessed and receive immediate CPR and defibrillation survival rates are dramatically higher” Speed of CPR > response 030
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026So a 6-8 minute response is already behind the eight ball when you realize that’s after the call is dispatched which means it’s been at best 2 minutes in most cases already. So 8-10 minutes when the window is 4-6 for competent CPR to then be followed by AED. 140
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026The reason NL is so much higher is because they have a standing program around a volunteer corps trained for CPR that gets notices based on geopin when an emergency is triggered. And by having a high placement rate of AEDs and people trained to use them. Actual EMS response doesn’t differ much. 240
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026I’ve actually researched this one some. The survival rate for a cardiac arrest in the U.S. is only 9-10%. Response is limited in impact because the window is too short. The outcome is largely decided by how quickly CPR is started, then an AED is used. 110
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026So it’s 500 gallons vs 750-1000. 1200-1500gpm pump vs 2000. Less excess hose to match hydrant spacing. Tighter, more efficient storage methods (so EU format here). Cab-over chassis to fit more usable volume in a shorter wheelbase. Result is 10’ lane, tighter turns, less width for setup are allowed. 140
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026I think if we went to a truly EU like format all of what you’ve said is true. I also think practically this just isn’t the path that’s likely. The most feasible is some version of “right sized” apparatus that’s smaller than current, but larger than EU examples and resulting compromise. 130
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026If a U.S. city FD decided to focus on replacement equipment that worked hand in hand with proposed street changes - collaboratively working to use equipment on bus lanes, bike lanes, etc - they would see response times improve and reduce the accidents they respond to at the same time. 120
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026As far as I can tell speed of response matters for amount of damage to some degree but doesn’t appear to have any real life safety impact. As FDs emphasized this metric more and more, tightened the times the fire deaths per fire changed none. 130
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Thanks for the clarification. I misunderstood the explanation it seems. 010
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/202690th percentile time is the standard US tracking method. When a department tells you their response time is say 6 minutes, it’s an average of 6 minutes after tossing out the slowest 10% of calls. This also results in inaccurate comparisons by many when talking about US response times vs elsewhere. 230
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026There has been zero improvement in deaths per fire for ~5 decades, because response after the fact has little impact on outcomes. But we could save 3-4x that number by simply making safer streets that also work better for everyone on them. 150
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Meanwhile if a typical U.S. city reduced road deaths by just 10% they would save more lives than all fire deaths. Road diets, traffic calming and related show reductions in crashes of ~20-40% and in fatalities and serious injuries of ~30-40%. 180
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026The Paris Fire Brigade (serving a metro of 10M) has an average fire response of 12 minutes. 7 for EMS. Houston as a US example has 90th-percentile times of 13 minutes for fire & 15 for EMS. Smaller apparatus & alternative vehicles improves medical response times without out sacrificing capability. 2607
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026I would expect them to continue to push yes. Perhaps more at state level for moment. If can get states to just add to their code it’s same thing in the end. 000
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Electric is fine, but at present with the different form, smaller overall size etc it (to me) is an unnecessary added disqualifier/barrier to adoption. 010
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 28/06/2026I wish they would sell the AT model here. The RTX is their electric version, which creates an immediate added barrier to consideration for many departments at the moment. All other Rosenbauer apparatus in the U.S. are just their American acquisition making the same outdated custom stuff as others. 120

Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 27/06/2026There is no “rule” bike corridors must be on every street or always the fastest direct path. It’s fine if they sometimes require going an extra couple blocks and around. Already true in Copenhagen and other bike friendly cities. 010
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 27/06/2026One thing I believe we keep doing really poorly here is making adding bike lanes feel like a direct taking of auto utility. Whether true or not, perception matters. If we did more your method you would see less direct conflict. 110
Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 27/06/2026“Dad, why don’t we build streets that allow cars, pedestrians and bicyclists to all use them?” “We can’t, we don’t know how. Jason Cox @jasoncoxnc.bsky.social · 24/06/2026The Vienna fire department downsized their fire engines to save weight & space after determining their water network made the prior spec excessive. Meanwhile American FDs mandate 300’ hydrant spacing but buy oversized engines while fighting 10’ lane widths like the city will spontaneously combust. 181
