The "research but don't deploy" argument is akin to reading a few books on how to train for a marathon, not do any actual training, and yet expect to be able to run 26.2 miles on race day.

1/ I wrote for NYT on a 3-prong strategy for climate progress under Trump. -innovation & industrial strategy -pragmatism on fossil fuels -expand interests that benefit from decarb This same approach led to IRA/IIJA. But it did not pass the test for many activist groups.

Implement a radical climate policy, e.g. degrowth, would become wildly unpopular and that government would soon be voted out of power and its policies overturned. For climate action to be effective, it needs to be sustained &durable. I think that is only possible through climate positive growth.

Jason Hochman @jasonclimateguy.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Fundamentally the focus on improving tech and not mandating economic sacrifice is the only feasible way of addressing the issue. Climate action, especially if it's driven by policy, NEEDS popular support for it to be sustained. Perhaps some would disagree but I think any government that tried to ...

We need to rapid, robust, and sustained decarbonization across the economy and major investments in both adaptation to manage climate impacts and carbon removal to lessen their severity. I think the promise of a paradigm shift just delays the practical work that needs to happen now.

Jason Hochman @jasonclimateguy.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Agreed, & perhaps the initial post made the point too flippantly. I do think identifying the problem & raising awareness is critical but don't do anything to ameliorate the issue if there aren't ready substitutes that don't cause mass backlash or make ppl feel they're being forced to sacrifice.

Jason Hochman @jasonclimateguy.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Basically my POV is I don't think we'll ever solve, or even mitigate the impacts, or major envtl/climate challenges through inducing major behavioral change or causing people to give up goods/products/services they've come to enjoy, but rather progress on these issues comes from improving ...

Can you articulate what you mean by "major paradigm shift"? And how you would see it playing out in practice, and being sustained over time?

Jason Hochman @jasonclimateguy.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
A lot of activists are explicitly against anything that doesn't radically overthrow existing systems, even using the term "incremental" as a pejorative. I don't think those positions are helpful in addressing real world challenges.

Jason Hochman @jasonclimateguy.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Wouldn't that qualify as an incremental solution?
