Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 01/10/2026Morning. Rain finally broke the 14-day dry spell. Trump says Canada is being “taught a little lesson.” What's that? Oh, the U.S. is untrustworthy. Noted. Canada keeps building elsewhere, NATO stays calm, and Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk heads for the ISS. Coffee’s on. ☕🇨🇦 020

Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 28/09/2026Morning. Gorgeous out. My watch says take it easy. New U.S. bans on Canadian goods start Tuesday. A poll says 70% of Albertans want to stay in Canada. Show up. Joan Jack won her case over work for day school survivors. 🧡 I can’t control others. I can decide how I show up here. Coffee’s on. ☕ 030

Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 19/09/2026@gandersocial.ca and @eurosky.social getting closer isn’t interesting because ATProto suddenly discovered interoperability. It didn’t. Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 19/09/2026Hey Aussie and Kiwi cousins? Is there like a Canadian Gander or European EuroSky Mu? But for down under? Just wondering? You know fet your data out of the BlueSky PDS and into a sovereign instance? 🇨🇦🇪🇺🇦🇺🇳🇿 110
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 18/09/2026This here is what I’ve gone back and forth on with a few. Standing all that up is a lot of work. Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 17/09/2026Awesome! I’m here. I mean there. On Gander. And Mu. Canada and Europe are partnering up and now I’ve lost track of which side of the Atlantic I’m posting from. Ah hell, you’ve got me all excited! 🇨🇦🇪🇺 010

Reposted by Jason G. ButterfieldMark Carney @mark-carney.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The EU has delivered greater stability across the continent, greater mobility for its citizens, and a single market that gives Europe global economic weight. An honour to hear President von der Leyen address the European Parliament today as we build a deeper partnership for the future. 1083042699
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 16/09/2026Canada as the EU’s first “associate member” is one hell of a sentence to wake up to. The details aren’t there yet, but deeper ties on trade, defence, energy and technology? This is good, and odd as we figure out the relationship. I'm here for it. Very strange times. Very interesting times. ☕🇨🇦🇪🇺 030
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 15/09/2026Morning. Calgary-Shaw: more of this. No to 9. Yes to stay. Bell proposes a $50B sovereign data hub. I wrote about why that matters. Trump dropped salt tariff. Needed us after all. Alert Bay’s pole came down. Its people stand. Poilievre’s misinformation isn’t opposition. It’s noise. Smarten up. ☕🇨🇦 010
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 14/09/2026Morning. Canada pitches stability to global investors. "We have what the world wants.", PM Carney. Ireland saved its whiskey. Maith sibh! Russia hit the Kyiv–Warsaw train; Trump scolded Ukraine. Canada eyes an EU Ukraine loan, not membership. Sovereign-site post is up. Coffee on. ☕🇨🇦 000
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 13/09/2026Someone asked where I host my site. Fair question, given how much I write about Canadian sovereignty. The answer: it’s more Canadian than it was, less sovereign than I’d like, and still has a few foreign cables attached. So I opened the box. “Assembled in Canada.”jasonbu.onlineThe Beauharnois CutoverAssembled in Canada: How Sovereign Is My Website? 040
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 09/09/2026Oh, I’ve experienced that in the day job with a project or two in my time. Thankfully only one or two stories have suffered that demise. I wouldn’t count rough drafts/outlines in that count … would be hundreds. 😁 010
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 09/09/2026Morning. Turnip calls our tariffs discriminatory, then bans our goods. Fair trade means Canada does as it’s told, apparently. AP: still Lake Ontario. Space Force found the Empire’s tailor. Very ’30s. Iceland summoned the ambassador. Gander, take note. Respect goes both ways. Coffee on. ☕🇨🇦 000
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 08/09/2026Still a fair bit of backend plumbing before it works cleanly: firehose, relays, PLC directory work, indexing, moderation… the boring crap that makes it usable. But it will be a good Atmosphere citizen. It’s coming. 110
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 08/09/2026The protocol makes interoperability possible, it does not make it automatic. If Gander stays closed, that is a fair criticism. Open interop is on the roadmap and coming soon. Currently it's one-way in to Gander. 100
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 08/09/2026Morning. Canada’s $27.6B counter-tariffs are live. A non-meme response. Trump threatens Bombardier. Its 3,500 U.S. workers and 2,800 suppliers would like a word. Reste forte, Québec. Sapporo shifts some production south. Sleeman stays. Trust burns faster than it rebuilds. Coffee on. ☕🇨🇦 100
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 08/09/2026I added a new section to my site: Buy Canadian. 🇨🇦 It’s not meant to be a giant directory. Think of it as a waypoint for Canadian resources, directories and places to start when you want to spend, build and support here. Have something I should add? Drop it in the comments and I’ll check it out.jasonbu.onlineBuy CanadianA small, maintained set of useful places to start when buying Canadian or building a Canadian business. 065
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Good thread and good movie. Had the same approach when I was playing with Kevara. Just pull and show, no commit to the app pds records on anything unless the user logged in. Same thing on Byline.pub. And we have to keep reminding people everything is public (at this point). Enjoy the movie. 010
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Ok, your choice. That isn't quite right though. A domain handle is a great option and an extra layer of independence, but it is not the whole point of ATProto. Gander is using the protocol, just has not enabled domain handles yet and there is some bsky interoperability. 200
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Buy Canadian wherever you reasonably can. And when you see the bullshit being used to justify this economic war, push back. Resistance happens at the checkout, but it also means refusing to let propaganda pass unanswered. Spend deliberately. Speak plainly. Do not capitulate. 011
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Right. Gander is not doing domain-based handle verification yet. Currently, it uses 3rd-party IDPs, Canada Post at the moment, for human verification. Domain ownership identity may come later once the PDS is open. On bsky I use jasonbu.online. 100

Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Morning. Labour Day. Canadian wool is walking away from the U.S. Investors with trillions arrive here looking for stability. Turnip thinks Ottawa sets the dollar before coffee. 85% back walking from his “deal.” Putin: leave Ukraine. Pay for what you broke. Saxony-Anhalt… yikes. Coffee on. ☕🇨🇦 040
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Honestly, it is doing it's job now. Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is reflecting, accurately, the current state of the U.S. 000
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Exactly. Gander has built its own Canadian PDS and AppView on the AT Protocol, with its own firehose. That portability is the point: you can take your identity and data elsewhere if you need to. I’m just waiting for migration to open up like EuroSky, then I’m likely moving. 110
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Great points. It depends what you want from the space, and I get missing the news. I expect more outlets as Gander grows. I’m looking forward to selective two-way integration with Bsky and Mu: follow and discuss news from accounts there, while keeping the rest of the noise at arm’s length. 010
Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 07/09/2026Agree, and I think they are looking at other options. Hopefully something else comes up and is cost effective, that does not rely on a US service. 020

Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 06/09/2026I’ve been spending a little more time on @gandersocial.ca . The feed feels different. People tell stories. Founders answer questions. Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 05/09/2026Morning. Bombardier gets Mississauga wing plant. Build here. PP: stay in Canada, vote Liberal out. Almost. Albertans: vote. Hamilton: 29%. Counter-tariffs Monday. A deal isn’t caving. Turnip doesn’t need Canada? Four million oil barrels daily disagree. Gander: Hoekstra for 9/11? No. Coffee on. ☕🇨🇦 020

Jason G. Butterfield @jasonbu.online · 04/09/2026Most militaries evolve from war time experience. Other NATO countries are taking huge lessons from Ukraine and incorporating. U.S. is the big lug going into a fight with zero brains swinging fist. Very little change. 010
