LOL. First it was “hegemons,” now it’s “hydronyms.” Damn, I love living in a country where our political discourse occasionally expects us to read above a Grade 5 level. 😂🇨🇦
Screenshot of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s post explaining that Lake Ontario’s Wendat name predates both Canada and the United States, ending: “Lake Ontario - then, now and always.”

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

This is the enormous fire in the Thunderbay district. Smoke will impact Northern States and most of Ontario. Photo by: Stephanie paavola. Ontario.
The attached photo shows an enormous wildfire across a forested landscape. Thick, towering columns of dark grey and orange smoke fill nearly the entire sky, illuminated by flames burning beneath. In the foreground, white water churns behind a moving boat, while a small stand of evergreen trees remains surrounded by smoke and fire in the distance. The scale of the smoke plume dwarfs the landscape, conveying the intensity of the wildfire.

Blaming PM Carney for UK housing, global inflation, and Canada’s economy is pure spin. Inflation hit after he left. Housing is decades deep. Pandemic response? Every G7 did it. Canada still has the lowest debt-to-GDP in the G7. Check everything he says. It's all performance and wrong.

Here’s the letter I sent if you want a starting point:
To the Speaker of the House of Commons and Officers of Parliament,
I am writing as a Canadian citizen to formally express concern regarding the recent conduct of Members of Parliament who brought and displayed religious texts in the House of Commons chamber as part of a political statement.
The House of Commons belongs to all Canadians, regardless of religion or belief. It is governed by the Constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the rules and traditions of Parliament, not by any religious doctrine. Canada is a secular democracy, and this principle is foundational to the rights and freedoms of all Canadians, including freedom of religion and freedom from religion.
It is my understanding that the use of props in the House of Commons is prohibited because such displays are considered attempts to make visual political statements rather than participate in debate through proper parliamentary procedure. These rules exist to maintain decorum, neutrality, and respect for the institution.
Displaying a religious text in the Chamber as a political prop undermines these principles. It sends a message that religious authority is being placed in opposition to Canadian law and the Charter, and it risks eroding the clear and necessary separation between religion and government in Canada.
This behaviour is not becoming of a Member of Parliament and diminishes the dignity of the House.
I am therefore requesting the following:
A formal clarification from the Speaker on whether this action violated the rules regarding props and decorum in the House of Commons.
If a violation occurred, that appropriate disciplinary measures be taken in accordance with parliamentary rules and procedure.
That Members of Parliament be officially reminded that Parliament is a secular institution governed by law and the Constitution, and that religious displays used as political props are inappropriate in the Chamber.
That House leadership reaffirms its commitment to protecting Canadian democracy, its institutions, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms from any form of religious or ideological encroachment.
This is not a matter of being for or against religion. Canadians are free to worship as they choose. However, Parliament must remain a place where laws are made based on democratic principles, evidence, and the Constitution, not religious symbolism or sectarian messaging.
Canadians expect Members of Parliament to conduct themselves with professionalism, respect for the rules, and respect for the institution they serve. I am asking for your office to ensure that this standard is upheld.
As this concerns the conduct of elected officials in the House of Commons, I believe this matter is in the public interest and deserves formal clarification.
This concern is being shared with Members of Parliament from multiple parties because the rules and integrity of the House of Commons are not partisan matters; they are matters of democratic governance.
I look forward to your response and to any actions taken to address this matter.
Sincerely,
010

Snowy and cold all weekend. Yes, Victoria’s mild, no, that’s not most of Canada. I made a map for the “experts.” This country is vast, winters are brutal, and we like it. Ski/Skate/Dog sled are travel options. If you’re eyeing invasion plans from a warm couch… try surviving February first. ☕️❄️
Map of Canada shaded by temperature zones, showing most of the country in cold or very cold winter ranges, with only small coastal areas, such as southern British Columbia, marked as milder. Emphasizes Canada’s vast size and predominantly cold climate, countering the idea that it is uniformly temperate.

I write sci-fi and near-future fiction. My debut novel, about Canada, power, and memory. How democracies fracture. How truth gets managed. How resistance survives in fragments. Pejorative: Echoes of a Nation is a recovered archive, testimony, propaganda, redactions, not a hero story.
