Another idea would be to put effort into surfacing a recurring weekly event calendar. I know they exist here and there but I'm not sure new users are seeing that soon enough. It could live in the town square. Day 1: new user meet friendly helpers, check out a calendar of events. Now they're hooked!

I echo what @jackthefoxotter.bsky.social and a few others have said. A public town square as the default world you join was High Fidelity's way of helping new users meet others. It was so fun. They gave everyone build perms and every hour wiped the area. It was like a 24/7 creator jam party.
