Banks don't directly profit from rate hikes though. Their cost of funding tends to move with rates (e.g. deposit rates, wholesale money market rates) and their net interest margin stays mostly stable

We need a system that works better than "private number". Put a VOIP into the myGov app, or ping me with a passcode inside the app and then have the dodgy sounding bloke give me the passcode upfront.

credit to LG, they seem willing to repair the thing for free. Yet to actually happen tho.

I'd like to nominate a piece of iconic contemporary Australiana. It's everywhere. You can draw a straight line through Hills Hoists, Victa Mowers, Bonds Singlets, Holden Commodores, and this :

What they are saying in that sentence is that there was no difference *between placebo and treatment* in any of the groups. There WAS difference in rates of recovery *between groups* independent of placebo or treatment.

Americans have passports now. Two aspects to lament here, and one to laud. 1. More americans everywhere. 2. We can no longer consider ourselves superior to them in this domain. but 3. they might actually learn something

Bret's over-the-fence gourds grew gigantic. Biggest one 4.7kg. I feel strange about using up so much good soil nutrient just to grow inedible ornamental vegetables!!

The rules ...worked. Related: young PhDs came back from America/ UK with know-how. Now look: A new paper on Parkinsons in Nature Med. Small Phase 1 trial with promising results. What do they report? A puff-piece? No. A conservative, mature paper on safety+tolerability of the treatment. 👏 3/4

This is part of this work I think. Promising. A less humble researcher might have revved the whole community up into a froth over this .

In the future we will all be rolling in an entourage. (Most of us will be the staff). This is my take on the effect of AI on jobs. Human-made goods and services will be a signal.

Obviously you can buy cheaper apples and (much) more expensive shoes. Point is, the price categories now intersect...

How would your grandfather feel about this fact? In 2026 a kilogram of apples can cost MORE than a pair of shoes. #ausecon #auspol

Not new but still sooo impressive: 18 months of taking this medicine could lose you ~25kg. Look at the placebo - massive weight loss is incredibly rare, so this is significant.

Amazing research by an Aussie scientist now at Stanford. She scans people using positron emission tomography. People with #mecfs light up like a 🎄. In the muscles (which, maybe you could argue they're more sedentary) but also in the bones. 1/3

Can confirm I have a pumpkin growing here in Yarraville. Don't think it's going to win any prizes though! Photos taken about 10 days apart. If it gets to the size of a grapefruit I will declare victory. 🍾

From base camp, you're not allowed to go on and up. But I was 22: I went on and up. Until the altitude told me: no more. ( I didn't even make it to the mountain proper. This is one of the lakes in the glacial moraine below the north face.) 3/4

One thing I'm proud of doing in my life: 2003. I'm in Beijing doing a study abroad semester. The other Aussies used our autumn break to visit Shanghai. But I had found a reference online to a place in a back alley that would hook me up to get into Tibet. (you're meant to go in a tour group) 1/4

The New York Times is supposedly revealing the inventor of Bitcoin with a stylometric analysis. It's big, because of the Times imprimatur. But is it new? This * 12 year old *forum comment suggests it is not new at all.

Bret over the back fence believes he is growing Australia's most successful pumpkin plant. But I just researched this leaf shape and it's a ... gourd.

For context, here is a story from another Victorian lab trying to recruit people for an #mecfs study. Everyone thinks someone else will volunteer, surely they don't need *me*. But this is actually one of the hard parts of science. Whole trials fail because they can't recruit people!!

Sports lovers, it is time to become aware of Aussie hotshot **Talia Gibson**, who is tearing it up in America right now, slaying seeds left and right on her way through the field at Indian Wells. I'm not saying she's the new Ash Barty, but these results whisper it!
