129kg. That's the EU average of food waste per person in 2024.   The better news?   In 2025, the EU adopted binding targets to reduce food waste by 2030. Parliament also pushed to make it easier to donate unsold food to those in need. Find out more: link.europa.eu/7FN3Y
ALT text bar chart:
Bar chart titled "Food waste in the EU – Kilograms per person in 2024". Data is shown for all 27 EU member states, ranked from highest to lowest total food waste. Each bar shows two values: total waste (including households, farms, fisheries, food manufacturing, retail, and restaurants) and waste from households specifically. Cyprus has the highest total at 295 kg per person, followed by Denmark (261 kg), Greece (208 kg), Romania (188 kg, 2023 data), and Portugal (161 kg). The EU average is 129 kg. Spain has the lowest total at 54 kg, preceded by Lithuania (68 kg) and Slovakia (72 kg). Note: figures for the Netherlands, Finland, and Spain use a differing definition; some figures are estimated. We will be relentless in the defence of our democracies. Proud of the concrete recommendations put forward by @europarl.europa.eu today to strengthen our democratic resilience. Stronger sanctions. Better enforcement. Because defending democracy requires a collective European response.
