My long standing hate against Fletcher has finally been dented!

I will keep saying this, if the Greens are not asking for 2 ticks, a local vote for Labour is the best thing to help the Greens get into government AND means you get a better deal on your MP. Bonus points if you have a proper lefty candidate, cause they will be better for the Greens as allies #nzpol

He did make me concerned a bit when he turned to me at one point and said he had "A message for Swarbrick", but that turned out to be him trying to soft launch me running for Parliament 😳

When people express that regret, listening to it is incredibly powerful as a means of change. It takes a degree of grace that is hard, but the rewards can be so great. My mind goes to my uncle who told me after voting National, he doesn't know where to look this election.

Honestly, I think there is an element of this for every party. The people who still hold onto the old idea of Winston being the most frustrating.

I had someone who came from the Netherlands, so she understood multi-party democracy well, but was very disinterested in wanting to know how electorate voting works. Strange interaction, but she's at least party vote Green.

If the government survives into the next election, it is going to be terrifying for people like me. People will say harm reduction isn't enough while being far from the fucking harm, it's not a luxury I get. I'm scared as hell frankly.

I hope that if they push this as a deal with Labour, it would give the Greens more support to get Labour to actually get shit done.

In case this gets missed in all the news today #nzpol
Reporting of Hipkins on RNZ talking about enrollment, saying they would reverse changes to enrollment cut-off and calling it designed to take away votes for the left

This very much, I think the idea they didn't because they saw the supposed figure as unreliable was twisted by media headlines. Certainly a lot of areas I can be critical of Labour, but not this.

I will add to this, the reason I say that if you're not in an electorate where the Greens are asking for candidate votes, vote Labour local, is because the right have ABSOLUTELY no issues voting like that. They're pushing for an overhang, don't let them get it. #nzpol

You shouldn't get a National MP because Labour and the Greens both have strong candidates, and I'm sure those on the right would agree with not getting a Labour MP because of competition with ACT or NZF. #nzpol

One thing I've found looking at policy is, Labour and Green policy can work really well together. Meanwhile you have a lot of friction between the Coalition parties policy, maybe Opps will realise who can actually be adults come November. #nzpol

A minor thing in there I am very happy to be said by Labour, environment and economy aren't different, at odds things, they're intertwined and we need to start acting like it.

Had someone who was agreeing with cutting immigration, which ew obviously, but they did on the whole "we should be looking after our own" line and had voice support for wealth tax policy. So I tried to move away from immigration to "Yes we should be looking after everyone, and we can." #nzpol

Having knocked on... too many doors frankly this election, median voters are a mess of liking different things from different places. Sometimes you have to find the drive behind their support for a not good policy, and realign it to something better. #nzpol

The annoying part is, occasionally they are on point (lockdowns were good, coalition is a mess) but it trends back to cooker.

And if the local Labour person is a good left wing candidate, like in say Ilam, they will be better for working with the Greens. I wish we had transferable votes in electorates, hate that split votes sre possible.

I do think the slump Labour are having is partly due to Opp getting some traction, so the more centrist types are moving to them from National instead of Labour.

I feel like they should win the seats they have currently, the question really is the two they technically don't have at the moment.

I've seen similar stuff from Labour for a while, I think it's just that the actions of other countries and NZs lack of it, have prompted a response from Hipkins

They are doing this because they're scared, especially when you add how almost all of us pay less, the Green's tax plan is MUCH more popular than you think. Door knocking today had a right winger himself say he thinks Nationals no new taxes thing is stupid and setting the nation up for ruin #nzpol

Some of the best reception I've had repping Greens on doors has been from retired women honestly. Recently had one who had always been a Nat-NZF voter who was very unhappy with them, and someone who started sounding unhappy with all parties but seemed actually very much a Greenie in all but name.

Honestly, until diseal goes back to at least close to what it was before the fuckwit in the White House and his drunk fascist lackey decided they needed to feel manly, I think not putting the tax on fuel up is fine. #nzpol

Semi related hot take, the article talks about where Labour MPs come from nowadays, but this is true of the whole of Parliament, even the Greens to some extent. The working class seems to never end up there, and even when someone does listen to them and care it, rarely beats personal experience.

Well generally speaking the risk this election of overhang for National does make it a bit weirder, HOWEVER, I would not expect that seat to be one where National are even close to winning so Greens can go wild.

I think (THINK) the plan might be to take the boomer bait policy out of the campaign, which I would find a good move. The problem is I really really don't think this is a good way to do that.

I hope that there is a push on all parties in opposition now to actually devolve power to councils properly, after the strong arm wank Luxon and his cronies have pushed on everyone #nzpol

Both can be true to be fair. I don't think it would come off as silly as it if they had not implied there was no rush to do so before the election then immediately suggested it be done before it. That said would love Labour to outline where they want change.

The two main ones that annoy me are when people complain about them not committing to things they have committed to, or (specifically because of who I am) act like Labour is "Just like the Democrats."

Cait, Jarl of the Bread Makers 🏳️‍⚧️ @jarlbreadmaker.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I certainly agree broadly, but sometimes it does feel like what is said here very weak and more based on vibes than anything else. Not being critical because we can do better, but just hating for the sake of hating that doesn't really get us anywhere...

From my experience on the doors, a lot of people have concerns that they don't realise relates to a wider thing, or just want to be heard by someone. Just asking questions and letting people speak, with a little input back really does help find the inroads and get them on board.

I think a lot of that missing portion is currently sitting in Opps too, who are going there because while I certainly have my thoughts, they at least are offering a different vision that makes people want to take a chance.

A frustrating vibe I've seen here is people assuming voters on the left annoyed with Labour will go to Greens by default. You need to win people over on the Greens vision, not just Labour bad, and a lot of the energy here carries less "We need to bring them in" and more "How could they not?" #nzpol

Would also make sense to have more effort on your electorate rather than a wider national message.

If I can think of one abject failure the Greens have had since 2023, it is how the harassment of Doyle was responded to. Felt like they reacted for candidate vetting by becoming prudish in a way I know even Labour is not. No disrespect to Josh tho, being a vet doesn't mean you cannot be a leftist.

To be fair, I do think until recently the Greens have been REALLY bad at pushing their tax plan. Only the top 0.3% pay more under it while everyone else pays less, and it generates billions in revenue. Us lefties love some eat the rich, but most will like the less tax and better funded services mix.
