I don’t know about you, but my personal projects often metastasize. I start going in one direction, and after a while I’ve learned a lot about what I really want so I start a fresh implementation in a new subfolder, and along the way I’m building tools and libraries as I discover I need them. After a while it’s a tangled mess, where the production app uses maybe 30% of the code, and there are at least three reusable libraries waiting to be born, if only I could get my act together to do the cleanup.

So now I’ve finally gathered the will to do some refactoring, but why do the work by hand when I can automate the process?

ok I think I've really got this working. - rich text CRDT (peritext-based) - movable blocks with split & join, retaining provenance and collaborative editing - strong cycle prevention both for split/join and block nesting annnd just for fun I've also implemented multicursor in the demo (cmd+click)

so my spouse is part of a weirdly intense but mostly benign men's workout group that meets at like, 5:30am outside every day, even in winter. they do a lot of burpees and lugging cinder blocks up hills and stuff.
they take turns leading the workouts and tomorrow is his turn. I asked what he was planning. he handed me a sheet of William Carlos William poems from a large stack he'd printed.
I said "what" and he explained, helpfully, "it's a William Carlos William themed workout." I asked what inspired it and he said "l've been planning this for months."

it was a smash hit.
a dozen guys showed up (more than usual). spouse brought a red wheelbarrow and they took turns bringing cinder blocks up the hill with it. then they broke up in teams and did a relay with an "icebox" (cooler filled with 40lbs of ice). at the end he opened the cooler to reveal it was full of beach plum lacroix and all the guys cheered. they drank sparkling water as he read 'approach of winter' out loud.
he was home by 6:30am.

Yep. Prestige podcasting is dying for the same reason as the rest of the media: Pontificating is cheap and reporting is expensive.

It turned out that companies could make way more money if they went straight to the profitable projects—the ones that favored big names and “always on” publishing schedules, and which required (and allowed for) less editing, less format experimentation, and less contemplation. This is why the word “podcast” increasingly means “dudes talking at each other for five hours on camera.” Those hours are then cut down to one minute-ish clips to share on social media in the increasingly futile hope that one will go viral. Step 3, as always, is: ??? Step 4, the most important one, remains: Profit. The result of this enshittification is a fundamentally different medium, and one that produces work very different than the kind I got into this business to make. The consensus picks among people in the industry for the best and most influential podcasts of all time are the sort of work that the industry mostly does not produce anymore—higher-touch narrative projects that are more novel than shitpost, and more art than commerce.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)
