I probably could/should have framed a bunch of the points in here more positively too. my bad, but I don't have more energy to keep editing this. next blog will be more positive. 🙂

Just helping with editing here. These bots aren’t sentient. They’re doing what they’re programmed to do. OpenAI, a private company supposedly bound by laws, committed federal crimes.
Screenshot of BBC article: OpenAI bots (struck through) meddled with multiple US government agency sites

Everyday I stray closer to Elixir + Phoenix, purely because of replies like this:
Jose Valim on Twitter saying:

You are right but it also feels short-sighted? You have the most powerful tool you ever had, you have become a 1000x maker, and you can't think of how to make your stack 10x better?

Yes, Rust is fast, the type system catches bugs, but there is so much beyond it.

* Why not make Ruby 10x faster?
* Why not make Ruby (and therefore Rails) really great at concurrency?
* Why not add a banging type system to Ruby that can provide guarantees beyond Rust?
* Why not embed SQLite3 into Rails with a replication protocol so you can really compress the stack beyond a single server?
* How to preemptively fix most bugs from the most critical parts of Rails, such as database pools?

Yes, who cares about ActiveSearch, but there are so many ways we can fundamentally improve our stacks that go beyond asking the agent to just crap out code. Phoenix is still the only framework that ships with presence, because it turns out it is deceptively a hard problem to solve correctly, but somehow all issues are solved?

I understand some folks have no interest in doing any of the above, and that's fine, but then at least pass the baton to the people who want to do exactly that.

PS: I say all of this with love ❤️

Rails continues to solve the problems I face as much as ever. the takeaway from my post isn't that I'm upset that there's no next big thing for Rails. there really doesn't need to be. I would be fine with that.

if this is the end of dhh's hype cycles around Rails, no biggie. I appreciate the folks doing security, performance, general maintenance, and smaller feature work. plus there's bigger independent stuff like Herb from Marco. that excites me.

every store I've ever worked on has monkey-patched a bunch of classes, overridden views, hacked up existing controllers, and more. it comes with a cost and I assume will (somewhat justifiably) recoil at the idea, but the value of the flexibility outweighs those costs.

Jared Norman @jardo.dev · 26/09/2026
I've worked on a bunch of pieces of software that I can't imagine being built on anything but Ruby, or even Rails. Solidus is one such system. much of what makes Solidus great comes from the platforms its built on.

the talk didn't fit the setting and didn't do a good job of arguing for what it argued for. my views on AI are complicated, but I don't feel like I'd have got much from that talk even if I was much closer to his position.

Astro is our preferred front-end platform
We’ve tried every combination of front-end platform and back-end integration you can think of over the years, but nothing has been as consistently excellent than Astro for us.

Today is a big day for Herb! It's built into Rails 8.2 by default for all HTML+ERB views. My talk at #RailsWorld in Austin today answered three questions: What is Herb? What ships in Rails 8.2? And what does this enable? Herb v0.11 and ReActionView v0.6 released alongside it.

It's an interesting one. I'm working on something that's under wraps and I struggle to imagine building it with any other language. I think a lot of people out there don't understand what Ruby's dynamism buys you.

tbf most of them are just arguing that dhh's vision of the future is right, something that I wasn't even actually arguing against in my blog, but expecting hn commenters to have basic reading comprehension is too much

also, please understand that if you already hate his position on AI or his politics, this wasn't really written with you in mind as the reader. I don't think I did a perfect job, but I was trying to focus on making the argument for folks that weren't already convinced.

if you forced me to say something nice about David, I'd say that he's done an exceptional job of keeping up the hype and energy around Rails. the framework wouldn't have the profile it does today with him. perhaps why this keynote was so striking. jardo.dev/what-about-rails
