And then there is "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach. A book that is bafflingly bad yet sold loads in the early 1970s; it was considered a cult classic in some quarters. Must be all the drugs those guys consumed.

BIG NEWS! I am launching a new podcast together with colleagues from the Cluster of Excellence on Cross-Cultural Philology here at the LMU in Munich. It's called Pages of History and will appear once a month, following today's initial launch with three episodes. pagesofhistorypodcast.net

I know this is deeply unpopular on Bluesky, but people in coding-adjacent fields, and many in maths, are pretty shell shocked by LLMs right now. Just about everybody else, in any knowledge/information-processing related field, are in total denial and have no idea what will hit them.

This reminds me of Lord Curzon, later (?) British Viceroy of India, who in the absence of servants late at night was so baffled by the mechanism used to open his window he instead broke it with a log to get fresh air.

Douglas Adams wrote that the "kakapo is a bird out of time. If you look one in its large, round, greeny-brown face, it has a look of serenely innocent incomprehension that makes you want to hug it and tell it that everything will be all right" - And apparently, it turned out to be so!

Kākāpō numbers pass 300 for the first time in 75 years. New Zealand’s flightless, nocturnal parrot now totals 325 birds, after a record 90 chicks fledged this season, built on the Department of Conservation’s recovery programme, which started with just 51 birds in 1995. DOC buff.ly/7YIOBd9

"Cult" just means religious or social group you dislike. "Brainwashing" is a cold war fearmongering myth. No special trickery is needed to make people believe stupid shit - just normal social expectations from the in-group.

The Jehovah's Witnesses leadership has just dropped the infamous prohibition on blood transfusions. Only whole blood is still prohibited, and afaik that is rarely used anyway. Wonder what the relatives of those who died refusing blood treatment think now. www.jw.org/en/library/s... #jw

The loss of industry jobs was severely disruptive for many communities, even though there existed other jobs in the economy that over time absorbed most of the people affected. But if all knowledge work is also automated, is there anyway left to go?

The railway tracks put down for way too much money in the 1840s at least left behind incredibly valuable infrastructure. In 3 to 5 years the $trillion GPUs in data centers worldwide will be obsolete and sold for scrap.

That helps explain why big media, always the handmaiden of power, works so hard to frame climate concern as some fey, boutique, out-of-touch elite concern. They don't want you to know that other people are concerned too. If you knew that, you might organize & push for change! And so we get this:
