I wandered into the lobby of this #Zürich building to check it out during the day. It's a media company's office - transparency is on theme.
A high-ceilinged day-lit office lobby. The structural supports are all exposed, huge wooden vertical beams and tinker-toy-like ceiling beams. The floor is very shiny and reflects light from outside. A view of an office seating area along a glass wall lit by dappled sunlight. There are enormous raw wood beams supporting the ceiling, with similar structural ceiling beams crossing the seating area. There's a white glass-sided stairway, and the floor is light polished concrete inlaid with half-river stones. Close-up of wooden ceiling beams which are held together lincoln-log-style oval cross beams.Close-up of the floor from outdoors. White cement binds thousands of varied-colored river rocks cut in half with the flat side facing up. A glass door shows that the floor continues throughout the interior of the lobby.

My 18-year-old nibling just spent 40 min on the phone with me to verify her voter registration & review her sample ballot. She asked about political parties, who I like and why, and what a constitutional amendment is. Next week, she's going to tell me her voting plan. Who're you helping vote?

This graph is a good reason to introduce my new paper: By Generation and by Design: A Review of the Empirical Rent Control Literature. This paints a (somewhat) misleading picture of rent control evidence because it groups all rent control together regardless of design feature.

I wandered past someone cleaning one of these mostly self-cleaning public toilets in #Zürich. Check out the closet of cleaning supplies integrated on the back of the WC!
An open stainless steel closet sitting in free air on a public plaza. Behind the open doors are two enormous stainless steel water tanks and two hand sanitizer bottles, some rags, a broom, and a few bottles of cleaning supplies.

While #Zürich fountains often have dog-friendly designs, this is one is dedicated solely to animals. It reads, "Rudolf Koller Dog Fountain on the 100th anniversary of the death of the Swiss animal painter, January 5, 2005."
A low-to-the-ground metal fountain installed as a flat panel on the outside of a building. The plaque reads, "Rudolf Koller Hundebrunnen zum 100. Todestag des Schweizertiermalers 5. Januar 2005." Translated, that means, "Rudolf Koller Dog Fountain on the 100th anniversary of the death of the Swiss animal painter, January 5, 2005."

I've been wondering about the purpose of these metal strips lining the main train station in #Zürich. Apparently, one bit got bent (damaged) so I now know it's possible to put a wall up around the station.
Two long strips of embossed metal, the left a bit wider than the right, extends to the horizon point in a bit of asphalt. Some legs are at the top of the photo.A long strip of metal lines a train station, and in the foreground the strip is lifted up at least two meters on a metal frame with some mesh filling in the full area under the top bar.Photo of a metal mesh wall panel raised from a floor-flush metal strip. A new-to-me view of the historically low Limmat River in #Zürich, taken from one of countless stairways that go from walking paths down to the river's edge at nowhere in particular.
A placid river stretches out to a far-away retaining wall and long low seating area. There are several trees along the river starting to take on yellowish fall hues.

Yet another European heat wave is waning, so here's a #Zürich plaza in the summer. It is one of the city's biggest heat islands. This summer, they mounted umbrellas in the pavers to provide some shade.
An expansive and very flat stone plaza. A few trees are in the foreground, at least a dozen temporary white umbrellas are across the plaza provide small shade islands. Low mountains, blue sky, and a few fluffy clouds set the scene.

Out my European front door is a residential street that may be narrower than this, two-way with some parking. The buildings are 4-5 stories high, built to the sidewalk (so it feels very narrow). I hear birds singing when I open the windows. Delightful, I tell you! #Zürich
A narrow asphalt street with 4-5 story buildings built wall-to-wall on either side of the street. They are red, green, white, and yellow brick with red brick accents. There's a narrow sidewalk to the left, a wider one on the right with one electric scooter parked against a building. Cars are parked on one side.

More whimsy in #Zürich, all the ground-floor windows had similar Space Invaders accents.
A light blue house with a white window. In the arched part of the window, a darker shade of the same blue-grey fills the arch. A pixelated white space invaders figure is painted on the darker blue section.

That'd be more compelling if an individual voter's voting were consistent, but people tend to vote like their neighbors. When they move from blue to red or vice versa, their vote most likely flips.

I watched the work of a crew using a concrete saw to remove a huge poured pilings that had held up the bridge they are now deconstructing. I'm not the only one who appreciates the two replacement bridges, as I had company watching with me.
A huge irregular concrete block sits atop a piling in the middle of a construction site. Two heavy metal chains are looped around it and attached to a crane above. A guy is bending over, watching the saw work through the piling below the block. A huge irregularly shaped block hangs by two chains from a crane hook, about a foot above a piling. A work man in an orange suit watches it rising.

Speaking of the European drought, this is the river flowing out of Lake #Zürich, the Limmat. It is feet lower than usual, visible on the white section of this wall, and kindly explained by one of my neighbors.
A blue-green river below a concrete wall. The bottom third of the wall is brightly white compared to the top part of the wall. Spray-painted in red on the white part of the wall it reads, "This wall generously provided by climate change."

Wandering around #Zürich this weekend, I found two more stations with info about how the city is investing in improving public spaces. One is an old street-to-square project, one is a future remove-cars-from-the-main-train-station-perimeter project.
A pink 2 meter-high sign with yellow logos on it, two sides visible, located in front of a car-free plaza in an intersection. A toddler is climbing the shallow stairs up onto the plaza.A 2 meter high lime green square sign with salmon logos on it that reads, "Hauptbahnhof 2050." It's standing across the street from the under construction main train station.

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."
