Do you mean the “u” sound? I think we were told to do this at school too. It does work, as a quick start, but it needs to be practised, checked and corrected. So many Brits can’t be bothered.

It is, Stephen. Well, at least mostly. They put so much effort into it - a lot of arm-waving and furrowed brows and "Jan, what is XYZ in English/German?" But sometimes the role of 24/7 interpreter is a bit of a burden!

My brother learned a bit of German at school in the 50s/60s because it was the language of science. He can now communicate with my over 80-year old German husband, who only speaks pretty basic English. It’s a joy to watch them struggle - and succeed 🫶 They get on so well! 😁

Well, I do remember being massively impressed by the word Sehenswürdigkeiten (sights, as in tourist sights) which we learned in Lesson 3 of our school German course. But once you learn how the system works, it's magically simple. And logical. Which English never is.
