i don't want to drag the mood down now that we're actually enjoying the books again so instead of doing this in an episode i'm just going to post the rant i dumped in jacqueline's DMs for the rest of you to read if you're curious

the exploration of piper's queerness is about as substantive as magnus', they're both major characters who spent most of their screentime presumed basically straight who start being queer more or less post-credits

i didn't think much of it at the time because whatever this is a CHB Chronicles book, but piper and fucking will getting a namecheck as two of the most significant queer characters to come out of this franchise while the transfem nonbinary character who was written as such for two entire books where she played a major role doesn't get a look-in at all

like that was less egregious when we didn't know it was gonna be a total dearth of any trans people at all in these books but in retrospect it's horrible

whatever rick was trying to pull off by making the Queer YA Book hit more authentically by roping in Oshiro was a complete failure, these feel so much more sanitised than the stuff he wrote by himself before this!

and like its i'd say pretty obviously both of their faults

rick was the one with the clout who could have gotten a trans character added if he wanted to, and oshiro is a nonbinary person who if they had a single ounce of self respect would have walked away from the project if they had raised the possibility of like

even some bottom of the barrel shit like lavinia is trying out they/them pronouns and rick vetoed it

which means that on some level they both agreed that actively cutting back on even the paltry amount of trans characters compared to previous series was acceptable

fuck they even cut it back compared to Sun and the Star, we have even fewer monsters/mythics running they/them pronouns

like would it have killed them to have fuckin

johan be nonbinary or something, and even just like, imply that the reason he needs refuge at camp half blood is something to do with that

we get the telkhine who is basically a joke character and that's it

and tbh i'm like genuinely mad at myself that it took me until the very last episode to really clock that as a major issue, like i really just accepted that trans people can expect less than nothing from even books that actively declare themselves queer-positive that it didn't occur to me that i should be on the lookout for this shit

the GC freakout over the Cass Review's recommended puberty blocker trial actually being conducted is at least vindicating for me personally as someone who was saying months ago that none of them had actually read it and they just wanted an official looking piece of paper to socially murder kids with

What I am saying is that the Cass Review, rhetorically, occupies the same space in anti-trans discourse as Wakefield’s paper does in anti-vaccine discourse. Its content is immaterial; for the purposes of someone like Wes Streeting, the full text of the thing might as well be the script for the Bee Movie. The important parts are that it looks scientific, and the bullet-point summary of its recommendations could be used to justify withdrawing the life-saving healthcare which Streeting wanted to withdraw anyway.

good lord this design. i have come around on it so much. the way the lines on the forearms and thighs evoke wood-panelling, the strange, alien curves, the literal fucking cockpit, and even the mustache is like, so dynamic when you put it in an action pose. god the ∀ is cool. fuck.

TRANS/RAD/FEM (2025) best nonfiction book i've ever read. others have already talked about its invaluable insight, so i'll reserve praise for bhatt's amazing prose. very few books have made me this viscerally upset and angry, and keeping it a deeply compelling read regardless is masterful shit

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) all that said Brotherhood still rules. i can appreciate a lot of the little additions and changes this adaptation made (Ed busting back through the Door of Truth is one of my favourite moments in the show, and entirely anime-original). ops are all fire too.

Fullmetal Alchemist (manga) its awesome how every time i find a new version of FMA, it becomes my new favourite version of the story. '03 and Brotherhood both kick ass, but the manga sprinkles in just a little more complexity and context that i think really enhances the overall story.

I Shall Wear Midnight (2010) what a fucking book. bawled at the end. Pratchett's gift as a writer is empathy, he's so good at identifying and writing from perspectives other than his own, maybe without even realising he's doing it.

Thomas was Alone - a classic of the "indie game with decent platforming mechanics and a good story" genre. also a precision cruise missile strike of sincerity right at the core of the socially maladjusted and irony-poisoned teen i was when i played it. helped kickstart me out of that phase.

Titanfall 2 - staying on sci-fi shooters, this game flopping has always been tragic imo. incredibly fluid movement, great art design, *a level where you're hopping around capital ships in an in-atmosphere fleet battle*.. the entire campaign was fucking awesome. plus, y'know. mechs.

Halo: Reach - my first Halo game, and to this day my favourite. foundational for my love of grounded, gritty military sci-fi and blocky visual design, and the only game in the series whose tone really fits the setting imo. lots of neat details to discover too. oh and i could play as a girl Spartan-
