Came here to say this, but through a Swedish, rather than Danish experience. The “common sense eugenics” is strong around here. RFK Jr’s stances look…not unfamiliar.

Yep, there are good things happening under the label, but I have a feeling they’ll start moving away from the term. (It’s got a bang of the “sovereign citizen” movement off it, too.)

Of course. But the word is being used as cover for all kinds of things. People have decided that the term “sovereign” means whatever they want it to mean, including things that will take us backward. (And won’t actually be whatever they even argue “sovereign” is).

I also had a big cry this past week about the state of websites lately. I love the web. I love the Internet. It’s a wonder of technical and social collaboration, even with all of its flaws. And a bunch of people are making absolute shit of it. These websites are the ocean garbage patch of the web.

It’s such sad beige and I hate it. We’ve been working on a new design pattern library and at one point we accidentally made something that looked a tiny bit Claude-scented and immediately changed course. I sincerely think the fact that our web stuff is made by humans is an important part of trust

I have thought long and hard about whether “clanker” is an unacceptable slur, and have concluded that — given that 1) this Discourse hinges on the ludicrous notion that chatbots might have feelings, and that 2) Andor rules — that is nonsense. Not today, clanker ❌🤖

No, but really, outsourcing our own moral discernment to the talking word toaster is not reasonable or ultimately positive for humans so it’s okay. It is a machine. There’s no mortality to it being used as a machine. You don’t remote lock a guy for cussing out his tractor. What are we doing here?

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
