Ah. Turns out it was june 1977... so not my first. The perpetrator was Thomas Holdsworth, and three appeal court judges knocked his sentence for sexual assault down from 3 years to 6 months in order to protect his "promising army career." Yes. A judge said that!

It never changes. I am getting on in years. The first ever political action i organised was c.1972 outside a UK Court (Birmingham), where a judge had just let a young soldier off rape with a 6 month sentence. Why? Any more and the army would have had to let him go. His career would be ruined!
