Some of the most frustrating people on God’s earth are those with passionate beliefs but no grasp of how to go about achieving their goals tactically 😬

Not sure ‘the people who won’t let low pay and high stress stop them being vicars’ is quite the recruitment publicity we needed. ‘Low’ and ‘high’ compared with what?

I remember the Green Party when it was a small well meaning bunch of environmentalists. Now it’s a small unhinged bunch of extremists.

So presumably the conspirators in Acts 23 starved to death?

As I read my way through the great Russian classics it’s thought provoking to discover how many of these famous authors were actually … Ukrainian 🤔

Fellow bibliophiles, buy as many actual books as you can. Then when a demented society gives them a wokeover to rid them of ‘problematic’ language and ideas you’ll still have the real ones.

Well today I discovered that McVities plain digestives (the acknowledged food of gods) have been renamed McVities Gigglings. Their chocolate digestives are now Togethers and their chocolate hobnobs are Buzzings. Is it me or has someone in their advertising department sprained a synapse?

See that black bundle with just one eye exposed? There’s a woman in there. What’s her name? What’s her story? What does she look like? What’s her perspective? This photograph is viscerally disturbing.

Good morning synodical skylarks. Everybody standing for General Synod is ‘inclusive’. The question is what they include and what they don’t. Make sure you’re clear on that point before casting your vote.

To those who believe there is a place in society for assisted dying, the obvious next step is to bend your campaigning efforts towards ensuring excellent medical and palliative care for everyone who needs them. Then and only then should this bill be brought forward again.

The coffee and cream pudding has always been popular. But now it’s inspired a dedicated cafe and countless products, from drinks to ice-creams to buns. What’s behind this big cultural craving?

Good morning, churchy skylarks. In the forthcoming General Synod elections vote for the Save the Parish candidates because if you don’t there may soon be nothing left for anyone with other sets of priorities to be a part of or feel excluded from.

After careful consideration my new Russian read is Dr Zhivago. Pevear and Volokhonsky translation again. Originally banned in Soviet Russia for political incorrectness, it was first published in Italy in 1957. It won Pasternak a Nobel prize for literature.

My favourite chapter in The Brothers Karamazov has got to be ‘Gold Mines’, where Mitya and Madam Khokhlakov end up talking at complete cross purposes about how he can raise the money he desperately needs. Perfectly timed and executed.

The Brothers Karamazov contains many blackly comic scenes. Check out the bit where the body of the much admired monk, instead of emitting the expected odours of sanctity, starts to stink, to the consternation of his devoted followers.

Let me tell you about our plane flight yesterday to a Scottish island; there were 18 people on the manifest but 19 people on board. Cue much head scratching that was not resolved but in the end it was decided to take off anyway.

Yes, of course but that’s not the scenario I’ve described above.

Jane Charman @janeeecharman.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Yes to all that. I should have been more specific. What I had in mind is a situation where Y is the best candidate, X is the second best candidate but X is appointed because there’s a quota to fill or for the optics. That’s demeaning to both candidates and bad for the employer.

It seems to me that the work of levelling the playing field is better done differently and much earlier. What’s missing can’t usually be factored back in at the point of offering a job or making an appointment.

They will, yes. And there are many guises in which privilege, favouritism and bias can operate. But the affirmative action policies that many institutions are operating today don’t actually address those factors and can indeed function alongside them or even enable them.

The problem with DEI is that it leaves all women’s appointments and achievements open to suspicion. People can always say ‘but if you hadn’t been a woman …’ That’s not empowering, it’s undermining. You will always doubt yourself.

Having appointed a number of people to a number of posts in my time I’ll say this. It is not a kindness to appoint someone to a post for which they are under qualified. Do not do it, no, do not do it.

Jane Charman @janeeecharman.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Appointing a woman over the head of a better qualified man is not feminism, y’all. We call it ‘progressive misogyny’.

Jane Charman @janeeecharman.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Morning skylarks. Is it ever right to appoint the female person instead of the best person? As a feminist I say it is never right.

Congratulations to @countbinface.bsky.social on achieving just under 27% of the vote in the Clacton by-election. Many so called ‘mainstream’ political parties have not performed nearly so well in by-elections in past years.

Hasn’t Hirsch, by claiming that fellow black academics covered up for Arday, dealt them a far more deadly wound than he did?

According to this article Arday’s fellow black academics all had concerns about him but ‘they did not voice them publicly because … we would all be damaged in the process.’ I hadn’t thought I could feel any more depressed about this affair but suddenly I do.

Presumably they’ll carve out some kind of class exemption that includes these two. Another factor is that releasing them now might put them in danger of public reprisals. Safer if they’re let out quietly when their normal sentences expire.
