GLP1s can do two things at once: 1. help people overcome failures of willpower to eat better and 2. feed into broad anxieties about eating and diets. in my book i explicitly write that i'm cautiously optimistic about them for weight management. far less so about their role in broader diet culture.
110
Jan Dutkiewicz @jandutkiewicz.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
i'm talking averages. you look at the HEI index going back to its inception, and the average American eats way more protein than they need. some people on GLP1s need more protein, but the stats suggest most are already eating more than enough. so it's more not eating less protein than eating more.
000
Jan Dutkiewicz @jandutkiewicz.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
no. no one needs more protein. people on GLP1 are told to eat more protein to avoid losing muscle mass, but that misses that most people - including most people on weight loss drugs - eat more than enough protein.

A tale of two nutritional schema: one right and one wrong. These biscuits are perfectly healthy. They get an A on Nutri-Score which - while imperfect - captures the nutritional quality of individual foods. Under Nova, they would be "ultra-processed" because of one emulsifier.

Jan Dutkiewicz @jandutkiewicz.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
What the "ultra-processing" category does is provides a massively oversimplified heuristic for guiding food choices that amplifies - rather than soothes or solves - our anxiety-ridden relationship to food, potentially driving confused consumers to counter-productive choices.

Jan Dutkiewicz @jandutkiewicz.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
While the decline of alt milk is grossly overstated, this is yet another case of the "ultra-processing" discourse potentially leading consumers to less sustainable and potentially even less healthy food choices. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

In Feed the People! @gnrosenberg.bsky.social & I make a similar point: there is a vast gulf between food availability (is there food?) and food access (are there resources to get food?) and utilization (is food made nutritious?). The food desert idea - especially applied to cities - conflates these.
