We need many more scientists like @sally-mycology.bsky.social — folks with the expertise and skills to describe #AquaticFungi! I’m looking forward to meeting these 26 species that are contributing to life in our highly threatened freshwater ecosystems.

Freshwater is dragging the whole curve downwards! The latest @wwf.panda.org & @zslofficial.bsky.social Living Planet Report shows freshwater species populations faring the worst (85% collapse since 1970😱), far worse than land or sea species. Time to act livingplanet.panda.org/en-GB/

Excited to be in Stockholm @ #Naturvårdsverket presenting #MoSTFun at a meeting of 🇸🇪 @biodiversa.eu funded #BiodivMon projects. Together we are making vital advances in Biomonitoring to protect biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human health and culture.
Street scene in Stockholm showing the Naturvårdsverkey sign in the upper window of a dark red building we also see commuters, autumn colored trees, and a mostly cloudy sky.

I'm having a protist-filled Friday, starting with the fantastic ongoing defense of soon to be 'Dr.' @annewalraven.bsky.social of the @fburki.bsky.social lab. Check out her fantastic work 🎉

📻 Monday 12:09 on channel P1 and online (mixed English & Swedish) Tune in to hear @zimingwang.bsky.social and I discuss #AquaticFungi with journalist Sara Sällström of #SverigesRadio! We hope people will be inspired to learn more! www.sverigesradio.se/vetenskap
Scientist Dr. Ziming Wang is in the middle of the Fyris River (which has very low water in this photo) with scientific equipment around him on the rocks. Ziming is taking water samples from the river for the study of aquatic fungi. Journalist Sara Sällström is navagiating the rocks to get close to Ziming with her microphone to record the sounds of doing this research. A spiky black piece of art appears over Sara's right shoulder. This is part of an art instillation at Ulva Kvarn at the time of the recording. Art by Johan Fremling "Den obekymrade vägvisaren" ("The carefree guide").

Look at figure 2B. Women as first author max ~35%, as corresponding author ~22%. Now think of all those hiring committees sitting around and recommending which candidates be hired based "high profile" paper(s). This happens every day--it is one way (of many) gender bias perpetuates in science.
