Back when I first pixelated Bun's celebration pose, I inexplicably made my canvas size ~30px shorter than the other poses and never got around to fixing it. Until now! I also redrew her hands so they look almost normal. #artilleroyalty #gamedev #playdate #pixelart #1bit #indiegame #indiedev #godot

The assets are getting more color getting added every day! The palette is sitting at 14 colors. So I've still got 2 more colors I can add to stay within the self-imposed 4-bit limitation. #artilleroyalty #gamedev #playdate #pixelart #1bit #indiegame #indiedev #godot

I had a hard time choosing the colors for each card back, especially for the more abstract designs. So I implemented palette swapping to let the user pick! Also, here's a li'l sneak-peek at mouse controls! #artilleroyalty #gamedev #playdate #pixelart #1bit #indiegame #indiedev #godot

Thank you! I still have more elements to colorize, but It’s been a challenge adding color without straying too far from the game’s 1-bit roots. I just took a look at some of your art. You did a good job with the limited palette aesthetic!

I was planning for Steam, iOS, and Android. But I’m open to an Itch release too. Whichever way I can get more people addicted to it 😆

I think I'm settling into a decent color palette here. I always loved the Playdate simulator's color-correction mode, which uses a grays instead of black/white. After testing, a desaturated color palette feels right. #artilleroyalty #gamedev #playdate #pixelart #1bit #indiegame #indiedev #godot

I initially played around with a few open-source PlayDate library replacements with Love2D, but none of them are in a great spot. Plus I wanted something that could easily export to mobile devices as well. It’s been a complete rewrite of the Lua code, but… so far so good!

① ArtilleRoyalty (Artillery + Royalty) is a solitaire card game based on the 3x3 grid, the Gridcannon. Grab your standard deck of cards and help her depose all 12 pesky Royals. There's nothing Bun Bun hates more than a monarch! 🃏 play.date/games/artill...

I've been a hobbyist game dev for two decades, and yet this is the first time I'm actually charging money for a game. It's exciting, surreal, and a little mortifying! ArtilleRoyalty comes to the Playdate Catalog on September 30th! #gamedev #playdate #indiegame #indiedev

I couldn't help myself from writing a dumb, one-off music track. It literally only shows up in the Background Equip menu. Oh, and I added a more backgrounds! If someone REALLY wants this track, I suppose could add it to the in-game shop 👀 #gamedev #playdate #1bit #indiegame #indiedev

I overhauled ArtilleRoyalty's scoring system and added a Sonic the Hedgehog style Results screen with a letter rank. Instead of Gridcannon's score of 0-6, the new one has more granularity, so I also added support for Playdate's Global Scoreboard API. #gamedev #playdate #indiegame #indiedev

I feel that. Last time I touched Pico-8, the token count felt like looming threat and kept me from making a nice, generalized entity manager. Instead I’d make a specific, hard-to-work-with solution to save on tokens. Thanks for the insights.

It is now a permanent addition. When you unlock the Card Back Designer, BAEN will get automatically added to your Custom Designs. I do mean it when I say permanent. You can edit BAEN, but you cannot delete BAEN. BAEN is forever

Whoa! 1D Pac Man! I love the one-button simplicity. Thanks for introducing me to #beep8. Fantasy consoles are the best—I love Pico-8 and UFO 50, so beep8 looks up my alley. Just curious, you have tried Pico-8 development, how does beep8 compare? Easier or harder to develop for?

Good idea, I don't have any flowers! The exact composition of the Roses wouldn't fit, but I could squeeze in a fairly convincing rose!

210

jamish @jamischu.bsky.social · 21/08/2025

You know, I didn’t notice BAEN at first 😆 I was just trying to write it from bottom to top to make sure I had room. I think I’m gonna keep BAEN as a default custom design when you unlock the designer.
