Headlines caused by Streeting, and now reported without journalists in PinkNews's 'reporter free newsroom'- who would provide his comments critical context and analysis

Media spaces have cultures where predatory and bullying behaviour often goes unchecked. Journalists deserve safe and supportive work environments. 🔗 Screenshot from: www.wearequeeraf.com/pinknews-to-...
A culture where predatory and bullying behaviour often goes unchecked. Journalists deserve safe and supportive work environments.

As allegations from former staff members have continued to emerge over the last two years, I've spent a great deal of time speaking to and supporting a number of people close to the brand.

Journalists have had little to no well-being support amid difficult allegations, and have often been left in the dark. This, while trying to pursue the role they thought they were there to do: Producing journalism for the LGBTQIA+ community, so we can all be better informed about the growing attacks on our rights.

That's because debunking doesn't work - it only affirms the myth. There are numerous studies that show this, and we need to improve our approach to discussing misinformation. We have got to lead with the truth and avoid repeating the lie as much as possible. frameworksuk.org/resources/be...
Framing essentials: beware of mythbusting
It’s a communications technique that’s well-used and well-loved, but here’s the sad truth about mythbusting: it doesn’t work. Worse still, multiple studies have shown that it often backfires and reinforces the myth we’re trying to bust. People can even remember us as the source of the false information.

This is because mentioning false information at all immediately prompts people to think of it.

Despite the best intentions, mythbusting subtly repeats and reinforces the beliefs we are trying to rebut. On top of that, mythbusting often involves making the information we are trying to counter more prominent in layout and design.

When we first covered this story and scoop revealed by @goodlawproject.org - it rang true because a literal government report has tried to warn us off covering the wider issue at play. That's usually a pretty obvious 🚩 - it's something worth investigating www.wearequeeraf.com/understand-t...
Gov report rebukes our journalism

Content warning: mentions of suicide.

Following our reports on whistleblower evidence seen by the Good Law Project, the government has rebuked some of the language we used, but has confirmed that there have been a number of suicides and unexplained deaths among trans people on waiting lists for gender identity clinics.

An independent review ordered by the government has rebuked claims that there has been an "explosion" of trans suicides on waiting lists. Written by Professor Louis Appleby from the University of Manchester, the report says the data available does not support the claim and that leading journalists repeated these claims in a distressing and harmful way - gov.uk

Analysis and our response: There is a huge irony in a government report calling the media like QueerAF irresponsible for reporting on trans suicides, in case it harms young people's wellbeing.

Last night, as my friends were dancing and the who’s who of queer activism were at the DIVA awards, at 8pm on Friday evening the EHRC published guidance. It set out how the UK will ultimately force the segregation of Trans+ people in public spaces My reflections 🧵👇

9/ Are adults the next target? The advice states though it doesn't impact adult care, it does show how this is a risk to patient safety "across all age ranges". It says NHS England will address adults who source medications outside of the NHS by the end of 2026, and as early as this year.
Adult Patients Over 18 years
The advice in this document supersedes previous advice set out in the NHS circular “Primary Care Responsibilities In Regard to Private Online Medical Service Providers to Prescribe Hormone Treatments for Transgender People”, 2018 (Appendix C) in so far as it relates to children and young people under 18 years of age.
The advice in this document does not extend to adult patients over 18 years of age.
However, in recognition that unregulated healthcare services pose a potential risk to patient safety across all age ranges, NHS England will address the management of adults who source medications outside of the NHS-commissioned gender dysphoria service, including the management of those who are using atypical levels of medications, within its current work to establish a clinical commissioning policy for exogeneous hormones in 2025/26.
1212
Jamie Wareham @jamiewareham.co.uk · 12/04/2025
5/ Who does it consider unregulated? It considers any provider that does not operate in the UK, whether regulated in other countries or not, as unregulated. It specifaclly names both GenderGP and Anne Healthcare - putting a target on existing shared care arrangements with the orgs.
The private care providers who will be worst affected
Two private healthcare providers are named in the guidance, drawing a target on their back. Extensive details about GenderGP and Anne Healthcare have been provided to GPs.

GenderGP has been at the centre of intense scrutiny by both medical bodies and the press after one of its founders, Dr Helen Webberley, was suspended for her work with a young transgender teenager. This was later overruled, and the company has since moved its operations overseas - BBC

The guidance also names a newer start-up, Anne Healthcare Ltd, which, though registered in the UK, is not registered with the Care Quality Commission.

Including both organisations in the document could have a vast impact for patients who are seeking new or have existing shared care agreements in place with the organisations if GPs follow the new guidance.

This is a complicated story, but its impact is simple: It makes an already vastly difficult situation for Trans+ under 18s - practically impossible to navigate. And that's its design. This is what you need to know 🧵
QueerAF website screenshot
Headline: NHS England tells GPs to refuse blood tests to some trans children and refer parents to safeguarding
Image: Screenshots from NHS Guidance document
TL;DR: NHS England guidance has instructed GPs to refuse any care that supports under 18s to receive gender affirming care like puberty blockers and hormones. It also warns specifically against entering into shared care agreements with some of the UK Trans+ communities most used private health care providers of gender affirming care. It signals this approach could happen for adults too.

3/ What spurred this to happen? The move stemmed from a clip of South Carolina Representative elect Nancy Mace adding a 'biological' sign above a women's restroom, and then campaigning to refuse to share a bathroom with McBride.
Quote of Rep. Nancy Mace

can’t imagine there’s anything more cathartic for a white southern conservative than getting to personally segregate a restroom

I never thought we would need a sign for this, but women's restrooms are for BIOLOGICAL women. Not men.

Bathroom bans and policies don’t do what they purport to do. The argument is they're created to 'protect women', but they usually do the opposite.  To turn a phrase, they stink all round... Here's why 🧵
