I had breakfast with Brad Bradford and asked him what I think is the defining question of his campaign: Why do so many people from all ends of the political spectrum seem to dislike him so much as a person? www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Richard Warnica: Does Brad Bradford believe in anything other than himself?
Bradford's relentless pursuit of success may also be his downfall.

This is why you don't try to tweet while walking home from a boxing class. It's both too nonsensical and too punchy (towards hot dogs for some reason)

(I don't know why I accidentally linked to an Icelandic site. Anyway.) This interview makes it abundantly clear this government is going to ignore its own requirements to advance whatever projects it wants and then point to the good it's doing elsewhere to justify it.
3347
Jimmy Thomson @jameswsthomson.com · 02/10/2026
His response is that you need to consider this project along the totality of what the government is doing (Pathways, ocean protection, clean electricity and so on). But that's not what the law says. The law — his government's law that they just passed last year! — is about individual projects.

Ok sorry but Tim Hodgson's interview on Power and Politics really gives the game away. He's asked, isn't there language in Bill C-5 that all projects listed as in the national interest should be considered for how they *contribute to Canada's clean growth and climate goals*? Oh! There it is 👇
Factors
(6) In deciding whether to make an order under subsection (1) or (4) in respect of a project, the Governor in Council may consider any factor that the Governor in Council considers relevant, including the extent to which the project can
(a) strengthen Canada’s autonomy, resilience and security;

(b) provide economic or other benefits to Canada;

(c) have a high likelihood of successful execution;

(d) advance the interests of Indigenous peoples; and

(e) contribute to clean growth and to meeting Canada’s objectives with respect to climate change.

Almost like there's a significant rhetorical and ethical overlap between someone who would choose to deny (or even celebrate) the Holocaust and someone who would make it their life's work to downplay the horrors of residential schools.

I wrote this two years ago, when the Roberts Bank terminal expansion was clearly heading toward some kind of approval — but well before another new oil pipeline was going to feed into it. This Pacific Link pipeline will add even more noise stress to the underwater recordings included in this piece:

Gas prices aren't high because of taxes! Don't sacrifice billions of public dollars to fix what you didn't cause!
1346
Jimmy Thomson @jameswsthomson.com · 01/10/2026
Suspending gas taxes is the easiest move for politicians to make when gas prices are high and it's also the dumbest. It does very little to alter the material conditions of constituents, but costs a shit ton of money while slightly diluting the market signal that high gas prices should send.

Weird that we name bridges, highways, parks, buildings, ships, ports and more after people, but not oil pipelines. Do people not want pipelines named after themselves? I think we should try it out on this one. Call it the Mark Carney Decarbonized Oil Expressway.

Jamie Malbeuf from CBC asks about there being "no" private sector proponent, which Carney laughs at because technically there is Pembina (again, at 10 percent).

(But to be clear, no, he did not answer the question directly — there does not appear to be any firm commitment from oil companies to develop new projects to fill the new pipeline.)
25311
Jimmy Thomson @jameswsthomson.com · 01/10/2026
Amanda Stephenson from Reuters asks the key question: whether oil companies themselves are actually going to develop new oilsands projects to fill the pipeline. Carney says it's a tremendous commercial opportunity for them to sell oil at higher prices to wider markets.

Jimmy Thomson @jameswsthomson.com · 01/10/2026
Carney, speaking in French, says more than 130 Indigenous communities were consulted up to now, but more will be consulted going forward. That we're "just at the beginning of the process." (I think — the only person with worse French than Carney is me.)

"This is an inspiring moment in Canadian history," he says, saying the project proves "energy security" and climate action don't need to be at odds.

Interesting that the CEO of Pembina, which, again, will own just 10 per cent of the pipeline, is being given centre stage when the Canadian public is paying for 90% of it.

Carney says the ocean protection measures announced earlier this week and the pipeline are all part of the same project. That's the same language he's used to describe the Pathways carbon capture project — in both cases, linking a major new oil project to a promise of environmental action.
