The community @ucl-arc.bsky.social worked hard to build a consensus on our policy for AI-assisted RSE @society-rse.org . We’re publishing it to help others learn from our efforts: doi.org/10.5522/04/3... Feedback most welcome.

AI-Assisted Software Development Policy for UCL Advanced Research Computing
This policy covers the use of large language models (LLMs) by ARC staff for software, systems and platform engineering, data analytics and computational statistics, modelling and simulation, and process automation — briefly "AI for programming". It covers model and tool selection, collaborative behaviour in teams, collaborator/customer interactions, future research directions, and education and training content for teaching software and systems engineering.A comprehensive review of AI-assisted software development, from tab-completion to multi-agent harnesses such as Codex and Claude Code, is beyond the scope of this policy. This policy does not directly address the broader questions surrounding LLMs: the provenance and copyright status, environmental impact, long-term labour market impact, and social and cultural implications, among others. Those are legitimate and live debates, and colleagues who have concerns should raise them within the appropriate ARC fora, their team and with line managers. We encourage open discussion of these issues in a spirit of disagreeing well.Creating a consensus policy is hard. This document is the result of extensive discussions within UCL's Advanced Research Computing Centre, and endeavours to set out principles and an overall position within which people holding diverse views on the topic can work. The authors acknowledge and are grateful for rich discussions and contributions from many people beyond those listed.

What I really need to do is do what I used to and go to parties where I try an opinion on for size and see if l like it. But I stopped doing that…

I don’t think it’s power dynamics, because i feel the change with peers and superiors as well as subordinates. But it might be power as in Uncle Ben’s law. My foolish views matter now.

I’m trying to work out why I used to enjoy strongly felt disagreements at work and now I don’t. Is it cos I’m old? Cos my nerves got shot in Covid? Is it cos I used to be confident I was right and now I’m confident all opinions are wrong? Anyway, it’s less fun now.

Explainability without mechanism is an antipattern.

If I am right about lucid source and dark source, then using readable high level languages (which are inefficient) is an anti pattern for dark source. “Claude, write a CMS with user-facing functionality equivalent to Drupal in ARM assembler please.”

Both have value.

A “dark source” project is one where we choose to let the source code be as opaque and unreadable as the agents like, driven by spec and asserted on behaviour.
110
James Hetherington @jamespjh.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
A “lucid source” project is one where we choose to keep the source well engineered and readable. (Independent of the machine/human written axis.)

James Hetherington @jamespjh.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
The answer to “is source code just assembler now, does it matter if it is readable and well engineered? depends on the purpose and domain. We need terms of art for the different flavours of software this produces. Cf open source and closed source. Maybe “lucid source” and “dark source”.

Leek's essay is a fabulous, wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary touching on urbanism, music trends, LLM crowds, Netflix algorithms, and other subjects, seeking to resolve a(nother) (seeming) paradox: how can we have so much *potential* variety, and *everything* is so manifestly *the same*? 12/

Leek proposes that these are all expressions of the same underlying phenomenon, a failure mode of data science that takes a world of "granular personal data" and arrives at a world where "personalisation produc[es] more sameness." 22/

Who is writing about rescuing tech-for-good from technosolutionism? I’m looking for insights on how we use the wise insights from the anti-technosolutionist analysis while maintaining a space for better informed enthusiastic tech-for-good communities and keep the space for nerd voluntarism.

I’m trying to train colleagues to say “how will we evaluate benefits of this project” not “how will we measure benefits of this project” - rigorous formal qualitative approaches are much better than unnecessarily quant ‘measurement’.

We spend so much time in the painful world of the currently possible (or the imagined awful) that it feels indulgent to joyfully imagine a positive data empowered future. A simple act of labelling releases the tension between the duty of working on the plausible and the joy of the possible.

One of the things I found useful about last nights Kirstein lecture by Katie Winkle was the idea of adding metadata about what part of the futures cone you’re working in to each project. This creates space for designing for preferable futures alongside work that is useful in the plausible.

When I send you ambiguous instructions or an opaque email thread that you have to carefully interpret to find out what I want you to do, I am paying you the complement of believing you are smart enough to solve the puzzle. If you get a careful step by step task breakdown - feel insulted.

Fear of losing a job you hate is a perversity emerging from the unsuitability of our economic system to respond to technological change. With confidence in education and protection while we retrain, change could be welcomed. If change is indignity and disempowerment we are all anti-tech.

Ok fine, yes, there is some upper bound and diminishing returns. But education and training can be near miraculous for capability.

At a managementy away day thing. Discussion assumes that staff capability is fixed and limited. Arranging resources well. Which is odd for an education provider. Human capacity is not limited: we can and should help each other learn and grow. *That’s* how you do more with less. By becoming more.

My views: LLMs can be helpful in scientific coding. Scientific coding has epistemic purpose and is thus different than other coding. Code readability still matters, it is not part of an opaque compile chain. Human comprehension is important.

I imagine a series of tailored agents for each step of a learning process, each prevented from helping with the layer you’re learning, but empowered to help with the layers you learned earlier.

Has anyone built a reduced capacity programming assistant ai (system prompt to limit capability) for pedagogic purposes? “Build me X algorithm” would have it decline, but step by step instructions which showed the algo was understood would each be implemented, assisting with syntax and cruft.
