Carney just released his new AI for All strategy to much fanfare, and…very few details on how he’s going to accomplish any of it. But is Canada investing in a product that’s doomed to fail? @trondizzle.bsky.social joins @jamesnicholson.bsky.social

Did Carney Invest in A.I. Right Before it Crashes?
Canadians were at the forefront of AI’s creation, yet we’re already falling behind in harnessing this revolutionary technology. But most of us aren’t convinced that AI is safe: not for the environment, or the kids, or our personal privacy. Plus, it seems like no one’s figured out how to actually make a return on their investment.

Is Carney a YouTuber now? What to make of Carney’s new “fireside chat” @jamesnicholson.bsky.social hosts with Zain Velji
buff.ly
Mark Carney, YouTuber
Over the weekend the Prime Minister released the first episode of his new YouTube series Forward Guidance. It’s a tightly scripted, “intimate” video designed to project calm authority while walking Canadians through an increasingly shaky relationship with the United States. It’s part history lesson, part recycled campaign slogans, and highly reminiscent of FDR’s fire side chats.

I had a great conversation with James Nicholson about Canada's impulsive embrace of AI boosterism and the dangerous Silicon Valley ethos that's largely driving it.

Who Drugged James Cameron? A Titanic Mystery
The mystery of who drugged the cast and crew of the blockbuster Titanic is Hollywood lore. In 1996 James Cameron shot part of Titanic in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, when someone dumped PCP into the clam chowder the team was sharing on the last night of shooting. Over 50 people ended up in hospital.

I went undercover as an Uber Eats courier and made just $1.74 per hour online. Here’s what I learned about the troubling cost of convenience
For six weeks, I hustled for orders and made a shockingly low wage. Uber says my experience was 'atypical' — but workers I spoke to say differently.

I'm sorry, what? I went undercover as an Uber Eats courier and made just $1.74 per hour online. Here’s what I learned about the troubling cost of convenience www.thestar.com/business/i-w...
For drivers, the results are unpredictable and too often unfair. Data obtained by the Star shows Uber Eats’ platform can offer two food couriers different wages for the exact same trip.

Labour advocates charge that the app collects data on driver behaviour and can use it to decide who it can pay at a lower rate, allowing the company to pocket the difference and boost its revenue. This concept is widely referred to as algorithmic wage discrimination.
