Hello, I’m James, and Landscape Photographer from Yorkshire, UK. I’m currently building my 2025 portfolio and will be sharing it in December. Here are some of my favourite photographs from 2024. Thanks so much to everyone who comments, likes and follows even when I haven’t posted for months!

Silence Not a breath of wind on this serene summer morning. #landscapephotography #naturephotography #photography
A distant mountain under a clear, indigo sky during blue hour just before sunrise. The bottom half of the image is a crystal clear lake without a breath of wind disturbing the water. The mountain is perfectly reflected in the lake. There are two pairs of rocks in the lake in the immediate foreground. There is also a tiny band of mist at the far end of the lake. The image is a vertical composition of the 4:5 ratio.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 has so many beautiful places, but my absolute favourite has to be the big open landscapes of Assynt & Coigach. I can’t wait to be back there this month. It’s truly where my heart is. #LandscapePhotography #Scotland #Photography
Image title: Far Away Places. Three layers of mountain side recede into a very hazy white sky starting in the bottom left corner, fading to white nothingness in the top right. There is low cloud separating the layers.Image title: Lightstrike. A blue/indigo loch with patches of light and dark water reflects the peach orange sunset light that zig zags across the loch like a lightning strike. The sky is the same orange and has an oppressive grey/blue layer above it. The loch and sky are separated by a ridge of hills.Image title: Dark Mirror. In the foreground is a small loch with silhouetted reeds. The loch is reflecting the pink and blue sky right after sunset. The loch is surrounded by silhouetted layers of hill that fall to black. The distance recedes into blue mountains with layers of mist hanging between the hills. The sky is blue and pink.Image title: Time. Layers and layers of brown and grey hills recede into the middle of the image. The layers are side lit by the rising sun. Beyond the layers are a series of mountains that run from left to right across the middle of the frame. Above the mountains is a soft pink sky, warmed by the rising sun. It is hazy and cloudy.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. This place has given me so much since I first picked up a camera in 2018. I remember my first visit and saying to my friend “I had no idea all of this was on the same island I live on.” #LandscapePhotography #Scotland #NaturePhotography

Castaway - 2019 #LandscapePhotography #NaturePhotography #Photography
A small pine sapling clings on to a black/grey, jagged rock that seems to cut diagonally into a fast flowing, cold river. The river fills the entire frame, aside from the central dark rock with the try and a few other rocks in the distance. There is nothing else in the frame. The image is a vertical 4:5 ratio. There is some white water dotted around the frame in small patches. The water is a steely grey blue. The first warm light from sunrise is kissing the small pine sapling, giving it warmth. The image is titled Castaway because the sapling looks like it’s stranded on the rock.

Dethroned - 2024 I really enjoyed composing this. It was my first portfolio image made with the wonderful little GF 35-70mm lens. It feels like an oil painting to me. #WoodlandPhotography #NaturePhotography #Nature #LandscapePhotography
It’s autumn. A fallen tree trunk with lots of spikes broken boughs protruding from it rests diagonally from left to right in the frame. It lays next to the remaining, still standing, trunk it fell from. The floor is mossy green and peppered with little yellow birch leaves. In the background are a number of birch and larch trees, all clinging on to their remaining yellow leaves. There are some grey, moss-covered rocks to the top right of the frame. To the top left of the frame the forest recedes into rusty red bracken instead of mossy green on the forest floor. The image is bright and balanced and has an oil painting look to it.

Gas Giant - 2024 #LandscapePhotography #SmallScene #IntimateLandscape #Nature
A close up of some highly eroded sandstone during blue hour, where the shadows catch the dark blues of the sky and the last after glow of the sunset enhance the orange / yellow of the exposed rock. The image has curving stripes from top left to bottom right. There is an off centre round shape that resembles a storm cloud on a gas giant planet.

Orogenesis - 2024 Mountains within mountains #SmallScenePhotography #LandscapePhotography #NaturePhototraphy #Geology
Diagonal layers of red sandstone and blue shadows. This was taken during blue hour, where the final glow the day cast a soft, colourful light on the rocks. The layers of sandstone begin the bend upwards and form what resembles a mountain rising from a distant landscape. The title is Orogenesis - the scientific term for mountain forming.

I’m James, a photographer from Yorkshire, UK. I am drawn to calming, colourful vignettes of the landscape. I hope you enjoy seeing what I see. #LandscapePhotography
A post-sunset pink and blue sky burning through some sea fog. There is a distant blue tinted mountain shrouded in fine mist. The foreground has a loch with silhouettes of reeds standing in it. The loch is reflecting the pink and blue sky. The banks of the loch are silhouetted, framing the water. Hence then name Dark Mirror.A textured and decaying fallen tree trunk lays next to the remains of its own trunk that still stands. The ground is mossy and dotted with fallen yellow birch leaves. There some rocks and a yellow larch tree to the top right of the frame. The top left of the frame recedes into a yellow leaved birch forest with red bracken on the floor. The image is named Dethroned. An abstract detail of some weathered sandstone. The sandstone has a blue-grey tone with a warm rusty coloured piece of rock representing a dead tree contrasting against the cool background rock. The top left of the image features very thinly layered rock with blue and gold stripes, topped by a textured grey layer of rock resembling a storm cloud. The whole image represents a dead tree standing in the way of a storm cloud. The image is titled The Last Tree.A very simple scene. The bottom half of the image is a dark blue / indigo tinted loch with a zig zag stripe of pastel orange from the sky above. The sky has a top layer of cloud that is the same colour as the loch water. Separating the sky and water is a thin layer of mountainside. The image is named Lighstrike

Temptation - 2024 #WoodlandPhotography #Trees #Scotland #MountainAsh #Rowan #NaturePhotography #Photography
A chaotic grey mountain ash or Rowan tree fills the frame. It has peppermint coloured moss attached to the end of its many branches. There are no leaves left. All that remains are hundreds of bright red berries in small bunches that spread out over the entire image.

White Shores and Beyond - 2024 This year had very much been one where I really stopped trying to stick to one particular style of image and just opened up entirely to less obvious scenes. However, old habits die hard. Big, open, airy landscapes will always be my true love. #LandscapePhotography

Against All Odds - 2024 If you’re a photographer you can probably just guess how much enjoyment I had composing this. Really taking my time to get the shutter speed just right. Just a really pleasurable and creative experience in a peaceful place.

2024 has been the most creatively satisfying year for my photography to date. Every single one of the images in my 2024 portfolio was made in the middle of the day during overcast or raining conditions. This is the real UK. And this work is the real me. I can’t wait for 2025.

I don’t often deviate from 4:5 ratio images. There’s something about that size, especially for horizontal images, that just works for me. However, when I do it’s to capture very simple scenes as squares like these. #LandscapePhotography #Photographer #Nature

Poltergeist - some of the most dense fog I’ve ever experienced last winter. Shooting through the woods with a telephoto lens really brings out a claustrophobic atmosphere. #Woodland #Photography #LandscapePhotography #Nature

Dark Mirror - probably my favourite photograph of all time. It’s represents moment I finally understood how my own introspection and emotions shaped what I liked to make images of. I have this hanging in my house. It means the world to me. #LandscapePhotography #Nature #Photography #Scotland
The sky is a dark blue, thick cloud with a band of pink as the sunset tries its best to burn through the sea fog at the horizon. There middle third of the image are gentle hills that have mist hanging in their depressions. The bottom third of the image is a still Lochan (a small loch) reflecting the colours of the sunset sky. There are reeds in the lochan that are silhouetted. The predominant colours in the image are dark blue, pink and black.

I think this is a contender for my favourite image of 2024. I call it ‘The Last Tree’ as, for me, it resembles the remains of a tree at the end of the Earth, with a huge storm cloud looming in from the left. #LandscapePhotography #AbstractPhotography #Nature #Photography

As Storm Darragh ravages the UK (the wind outside is crazy right now) I thought it would be fitting to share an image I took a few years ago in the height of another storm. I call this image ‘Shore Wrecker’ #StormHour #Seascape #StormDarragh #Nature #LandscapePhotography
A wave of immense power crashes against some soft sediment cliffs. The wave is spraying everywhere and you can see the sediments being eroded from the cliffs already entrained within the water.

As a landscape photographer in the UK you have to embrace the gloomy, rainy and miserable weather days otherwise your camera only comes out of your bag to shoot the grand landscape about twice a year. Here are some of my favourite gloomy day images. #LandscapePhotography
Haar, some see fog just lingered around the coast all day. The patterns in the send lead to a distant island in the mist.Rainscape. Some distant mountains under a very large grey sky, it is raining and you can see the rain falling in the distance. The mountains fade to white. There are numerous small lochs in the foreground.Time. Rolling brown, jagged hills lead to a distant mountain range under a slightly pink orange sky as the sun tries to rise through the thick clouds but just can’t make it.Hypnogogia. A very distant sand dune pokes into the frame toward the top of the image. The top third of the image is white from low cloud. The bottom half of the image is a flat beach, almost entirely white apart from some wet patches that appear darker.

Sometimes I like to play with ICM, it’s so much fun. I’m very hit-and-miss with it (more miss!), but I enjoy it nonetheless. This is probably my favourite ICM image taken in the northern highlands of Scotland. Do any of you make ICM photographs? #LandscapePhotography #ICM

Having a relaxing Sunday evening watching Prof Brian Cox’s ‘Solar System’ on the BBC. Truly awesome to see the scale of the canyons and landscapes on moons like Charon and Miranda. I was reminded of this image titled ‘Orogensis’ - this mountain isn’t as big as it appears… #LandscapePhotography
Horizontal canyon-like stripes of peach / orange rock with blueish shadows in the grooves. At the top of the frame a mountain appears to rise from the ridges, catching the sunrise light. However, these aren’t canyons and mountains, this is a close up of some eroded sandstone that mimics a larger landscape.

Sometimes the need to make minimalist photographs grips me. I go through phases of wanting more detail or wanting more negative space. Perhaps it reflects where I am inside my head. Perhaps it’s just a forever changing creative taste. Perhaps I was just dreaming… #LandscapePhotography

Good evening! In 2024 I have really pushed myself to be more creative with compositions. Going on two Scotland trips with the fantastic @taraw.bsky.social really taught me to open my eyes. She’s such an inspiration of mine. This image is titled ‘Celestial Falls’ #LandscapePhotography
A close up image of some red sandstone rock catching the blue hour of sunrise. The rock has very fine layers that swirl across the image, giving the appearance of a waterfall. The layers were in the shade and caught the bluer light of sunrise, giving a wonderful contrast between warm and cool tones. The image is 4:5 vertical.

Good morning BlueSky! It snowed all night here but has already given up all hope, started to thaw and become icy. Not all my posts will be some form of pathetic fallacy… but art does often reflect life with a ‘Cold Symmetry’ (this image’s title). Fetch me a violin 🎻 #LandscapePhotography

Hello to all my new followers! Such a glorious community growing here on BlueSky. Feels like Twitter circa 2010. It has JUST started snowing where I live so here’s a favourite wintery image titled ‘Overshadowed’ - I just love the shadow of the mountain projected on the snow #LandscapePhotography
A dark blue stormy sky hangs over a pure white Scottish mountain, covered in snow. There is no green or brown to be seen. There is some direct storm light on the side of the mountain, illuminating it and making it pop out of the image. Cast on the snowy side of the illuminated mountain is the shadow of another mountain which is out of shot to the left. It gives the impression of a looming giant hiding out of shot.

Wow, BlueSky is buzzing, it’s so nice. I’m seeing work of people new to me, and comforting work of old friends. What a hopeful start. Here’s one of my favourite woodland images from my favourite place in the UK. It’s titled ‘Kaleidoscope’ #WoodlandPhotography #LandscapePhotography
A forest floor covered in rusty red bracken with thin speckled grey and white tree trunks rising in chaotic unison. The canopy of the woodland is a mixture of yellow and orange. The very distant background of the woodland is almost aqua in colour. Everything is wet because it was raining when I took this photograph.

Good morning. It actually feels like we got Twitter back? I hope this really works. I call this image ‘Hydrogen Sonata’ after a book I love by the late, great Iain M Banks. It looks like the hydrogen-rich atmosphere of Jupiter to me. #AbstractPhotography #NaturePhototraphy #LandscapePhotograpgy
Swirling layers of grey, beige, steel blue and rusty orange. This is actually a close up image of some rocks, but it resembles the patterns and colours you see in the outer atmosphere of the planet Jupiter.
