The therapy seems to work for some, but he encounters someone he didn't expect: a woman whose narcissistic rage is essentially limitless. Her hatred and resentment manifest as mutated children, but no matter how many she expels from her body, her rage never dissipates. She's a living Pandora's box.

There's a surprisingly good fictionalised representation of the problem with Trump, made by David Cronenberg in 1979. In the classic horror film The Brood, a psychologist develops a method for people with mental health issues to expel them from their body by physically manifesting and shedding them.

Aphorisms like "Nobody could sink so low" and "Even he has some limits" simply do not apply to Trump. He has no floor. The depths to which is is willing to sink have not yet been plumbed because they are truly bottomless. There is literally nothing - NOTHING - he would not do to hold onto power.

The only way to defeat Trump once and for all is to understand that there are no lines he will not cross. He is a man without a shred of self-control or introspection, pathologically incapable of feeling shame or remorse, and capable of rationalising any violation he commits, no matter how obscene.

They understand on some level that Trump has no respect for the very concept of American democracy, but they repeatedly and naively assume that this line in the sand is the one, the line that even Trump couldn't possibly cross, even though he has charged across every boundary they have set so far.

This, I feel, is why the Democrats have so consistently failed to counter Trump effectively. They exist in a world of rules, obligations, and commitments - especially the old guard who have worked for half a century or more in these structures - so all of their solutions are based in procedures.

My point is we can't rely on anything with this guy. The guardrails have been removed. The referees are tied up and blindfolded. There is no net below. We cannot assume that any of the old systems, conventions, traditions, or rituals will be respected or obeyed. This is uncharted territory.

Perhaps one reason that Trump has been able to dismantle the very foundations of the previously unassailable-seeming United States government - in ways that Bush 2, Reagan, and Nixon were not - is that there has simply never been a Donald J Trump before. Nobody planned for him because he's unique.

People like Nero, Napoleon, Hitler, or the last of the French royals, with all their power and legions of loyal toadies, experienced true deprivation and tragedy in their lives. We talk about concepts like narcissism and sociopathy, but I honestly feel like these ideas can't be applied to Trump. He's a singular specimen, a man of unprecedented self-centredness and egomania, and I feel like our standard models of understanding human psychology simply break down with him.

Look at his many, MANY ceasefire claims. He seems to believe that he can just declare a ceasefire unilaterally and it's supposed to just happen. He's surrounded by sycophants and enablers who never tell him no, so when reality refuses to rearrange itself to match his whims, he feels affronted.

It's pretty obvious that Trump has lived for the better part of a century in such a state of pampered luxury and entitlement that he just doesn't understand how humans generally, like, DO things. He doesn't understand basic concepts that even five year olds get, like cooperation and sharing.
