PITCH
A former holy king does the one thing he swore he’d never do in search of his missing god. He goes home.

Malachi was born with God’s voice in his head. When God vanishes in the midst of a decade-long winter, Mal breaks the oath he made to himself and returns to the home he abandoned—the city where he was raised to be king. There, he’s marked to compete in trials meant to select God’s new emissary. His replacement.

After succeeding in the first trial, Mal demands entry to the royal temple, where he learns the skies are empty. God has stopped speaking to his priests and Mal alike. With no other avenue for answers, Mal must win the competition for God’s favor and assume the throne he never wanted, or risk losing his oldest friend for good and damning the world to a worsening everwinter.

“My head hurts,” Malachi mumbled into his drink.

“They say King Ridaris’ eye glowed like this.”

Did they? Malachi shuffled through his memories for any mention of that from his mothers, or the history books, and found nothing.

“I think it means God knows who you are.” Sen lowered her voice, eyes shifting toward the surrounding priests. Kinder to pretend she did it out of concern for his headache. “You need to be careful.”

“Aye.”

“It hasn’t stopped glowing. Everyone else’s did.”

He raised a hand to cover his eye, pausing to marvel at the light pouring over his fingers and palm. It spilled into every crack, crevice, and scar his hand had to offer, like liquid pooled against his skin. Malachi closed his fist around the cold light and pressed it to his face. “Hurts.”

“Close your eyes,” Samara offered. “Rest. We’ll handle it from here.”

For once, he did just that.

After a few minutes of careful observation, Maeve's gaze fell on a girl who had just entered the departures hall, with a jaunty little hat on top of messily pinned up hair and a small case gripped tightly in her hands. Her eyes darted around nervously and Maeve decided the girl had to be looking for someone, perhaps she was joining a female friend on a trip to the seaside, eloping with some lad, or she'd lost her family in the crowd. Yet she didn't seem to linger on any person at all and focused on the large screen listing destinations and departure times for upcoming trains. She mouthed the names, almost panicky.

"Damn it," Maeve muttered to herself, weaving her way between the throng of travellers towards the girl. "Sorry, couldn't help but notice, do you need any help?"

The look that met her eyes was one Maeve was intimately familiar with. The lost, frightened look of someone who had nowhere to go, no one to turn to, and not a shred of idea what to do next. She used to see that precise expression in the mirror for weeks

Why am I gonna do that when I can just spend it on what I want?” He looks at me like the thought of ‘paying rent’ is the most stupid thing he’s ever heard of. “Reckon I’ll be alright. Dad ain’t gonna’ make me homeless, is he?”
The kitchen is suddenly colder than the wintery weather rattling the windowpane. Benji is definitely back. An uncaring, selfish smirk on the surface, but I can see the way he sets his teeth, the stony eyes that won’t look at me. There’s a numb certainty about him, like the end of a film has been spoiled for him and he’s stuck watching it anyway.
