This passage from the book is one that has stayed with me forever, and haunts me especially now as a parent.

Inside this parentheses we get Jack's discovery of his ransacked drawers, his realization that Danny has poured one of Jack's beers all over the manuscript of Jack's play, his reaching out to grab Danny's arm. And then we get this:

They want to Air Bud their way to respectability. "It's not explicitly illegal, so therefore we're allowed to steal your work/hack your data/etc" All of the more troubling things AI is doing are already plainly against the law, but they think it should be legal for AI to do it.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about Musk saying new things should be default legal; not because I think it's de facto wrong, but because I think he thinks AI and all of it's activities are new, which is wrong. AI promoters want regulations only as a way of giving them the imprimatur of legality.
