Same! I'm impressed with how far they're pushing it, right from the start. I will say I find it hard to imagine this set up lending itself to a long term run, but I had the same thought with some of the Absolute titles and those have worked out just fine.

Jason Aaron keeps crushing it on this book. Early on, I wasn't sure what kind of legs this reimagining would have, but by now it's clear Aaron's just getting warmed up. He's probably got about a hundred issues in him on this. Steel gets an excellent spotlight here, with stellar art by Juan Ferreyra.

This tie-in issue to an event I haven't been following didn't make me regret passing over Bad Seeds, but yet I enjoyed it well enough on its own terms. Looking forward to Fraction getting back on track to the regular flow of this run, though. Not a big fan of crossovers when it comes to DC.

As strong as the Midnight debuts of X-Men and FF were, this was the one that hit the hardest, with PKJ and Scietronc pulling zero punches on the body horror. Aside from how graphic it is, there's also a real and tragic humanity to its characters, and immediate hints of a fleshed out larger world.

We only get a glimmer here of how expansive the world he's created for these characters might be, but the promise of bigger things to come is clear. And Matteo Della Fonte's art is spectacular, begging favorable comparison to Esad Ribic.

Hickman rediscovers his Marvel mojo here. His recent minis, Wolverine: Revenge and Spider-Man: Long Way Home, have been fine, but clearly were designed to be artist showcases, not the complex world building exercises that Hickman's known for. Here, he's back to doing what he does best.

And, as with the other Midnight books, I love that this feels like such a hardcore departure. The main failing of the recent Ultimate line, for me, was that it played it too safe in its reimaginings. That's not the case here. This is a FF that feels closer to E.C. Comics than to Marvel Comics.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
One of the best things about the Midnight books is how perfectly the art suits each title. Kev Walker kills it on this with the pulpy, Lovecraftian horror of Benjamin Percy's script. Gothic castles, stormy nights, sea swept lighthouses, hints of ancient gods. Walker is dialed in on all of it.

Stephen Wacker has a plan to fix Marvel Comics
Stephen Wacker addressed Marvel’s biggest criticisms at NYCC, outlining plans for fewer comics, a renewed focus on creators, less MCU influence, and more.

New arrival! I love that Marvel's been steadily pumping out volumes of Two In One. Why they haven't done a single Epic collection yet for the other great '70s Team Up book, Marvel Team Up, I don't know. Maybe someday!

For a movie that shouldn't have been made, it's actually pretty solid.

I dug the hell out of all three of these. I would put Spidey at the top, personally, but they all had their own distinct vibes going on.

But the crash and burn of the last three episodes, particularly the finale, was just too much. If there's a case for a grounded GL show to be made, Lanterns wasn't the one to make it.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If this was supposed to be John's supervillain origin story, ok. But it's hard to say no evil will escape his sight, when in fact all the evil escapes his sight. Or, to be fair, he sees it, but just chooses to let it slide. The cast was top notch and for the first 4-5 episodes it was promising.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The way things play out in Lanterns make me seriously question the grasp its creators have on, well, reality. You don't have to indulge in nerd shit to successfully write a superhero show, but I do think you need a clear understanding of right and wrong, and that is nowhere to be found in Lanterns.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If anything, I think some comic fans just look at its lack of comic book-iness and think, "Well, this is grown up!" But it isn't. If you're going to do a grounded show rooted in personal drama, you have to have these characters act in consistent ways that correspond to how real people behave.
100
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Still shaking my head over Lanterns. It's not a bad show because it deviated from comic lore, or because it didn't offer enough in the way of comic book style action. It's bad unto itself. If you watched it knowing nothing in advance about Green Lantern, you're still watching a poorly written show.

This was a blast. Great stuff, with some clever, diabolical twists. If you thought the Xenomorphs were already terrifying, imagine them being able to phase through walls!

Simone's wonderfully weird Uncanny run continues to absolutely cook, thanks in large part to the indispensable art of Luciano Vecchio. There's a ton of incredible artists working in comics rn, but with every issue Vecchio works on, he keeps making the case that he's among the very best.

Outstanding, Magento focused issue, with MacKay delving deep into Magneto's psyche, featuring a possible visit from Xavier (who may only be a memory ghost). I appreciated how the look back at Magneto's impact was focused on events within MacKay's run, which has contained several substantial events.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Really digging this event. Love seeing Scott and his X-Men firmly mopping the floor with 3K here, now that they've taken the full measure of these chumps. Also love how this event is basically just Scott vs OG Beast, who makes a major, unexpected move in the last pages of this issue.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Honestly, I'm glad they pulled the plug on it. It had its merits, had some high points, but it felt too mildly imagined from the jump, too few risks taken. It lasted long enough.
000
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Anyhow, not a fan. And just add the fact that they squandered the GL concept on a show as mundane as a prime time procedural to the list of reasons why this show was ass. Not a single instance of legit Green Lantern action in the last 3 episodes of a show about *checks notes* Green Lantern. Sigh.
000
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
...To say nothing of the people who *made* this show. Good lord, what were they thinking? Hal is pretty much the only character who acted decently the entire time, and all he gets for it is ten years in prison and a bullet in the head, while his killer is let off the hook entirely.
100
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The cast was terrific. The writing, however, was atrocious. I don't care about changes to the GL lore. That's how adaptations go. I do, however, care when characters are written with poor motivations and are made to act in ways that fly in the face of all logic. I do not get the people on this show.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The whole season has been up and down, but all the same, I was still surprised by just how bad the Lanterns season finale was. Awful resolution to Hal's murder. Like, on every level. Who did it, why they did it, and the fact that they suffer no repercussions from it. It's a bunch of bullshit.

Solidly funny throughout, coupled with a spot on characterization of Fred and his dedication to living a quiet life of low ambition. Terrific art by Luke Ross, and thumbs up for Stefano Caselli's killer cover.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yeah, so this was totally awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if writer Jordan Morris keeps moving up to bigger projects at Marvel, because he's great. Anyhow, I was already stoked for this based on the one shot that brought Fred and Passenger together, but this was even better than I was hoping for.

Charles Soule tees up his Venom run here. Solid issue, and I'll definitely be checking out what he's got planned for Eddie's new symboite era. It's inevitable that we'd get back to that classic pairing, here's hoping that Soule has some fresh ideas in store.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Al Ewing brings the curtain down on his Venom run in satisfying fashion. Personally I wish it didn't have to end so soon, as I dug the Venom and MJ pairing. Call me crazy, but I think it's fun to throw readers a curveball. But it's over and Ewing brings it all to a close as well as one could expect.

For an event that's been an all hands on deck situation, with the entire Marvel U fighting a global, even universal, battle, the rest of the MU takes a bit of a backseat in the end, with the final battle coming down to VenoMJ vs Knull. Kind of a soft finish, but with a chefs kiss reveal at the end.
010
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This event flew by insanely fast, but I'm not complaining. If anything kills events, it's when they lose momentum with too many issues, spread across too many months. This came out of the gate hot and wrapped up quick. The final battle is a bit anticlimactic but narratively, it makes sense.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Love Cage, but I find most of the criticisms towards the MCU clearly come from the perspective of people who don't actually watch the movies or shows. Or at least don't actively keep up with them.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Anyhow, hats off to everyone involved in this milestone issue. The deep love for Spidey on the part of the editorial team, and all the creative talent really shines through.
010
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
And let me say that if Patrick Gleason doesn't officially become part of the ongoing art roster on ASM, it'll be a crime. His art for Noah Hawley's "Still Standing" is one of the undeniable highlights of this issue. Every time he steps up to the plate to do a new Spidey tale, he only gets better.
110
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The back up stories are a mixed bag, but the best of them - "Still Standing," "The Gesture," and "I Can Never Rest" - are all gems, while the rest are mostly fine. Did we need an Old West set Spidey tale for the 1000th issue? Hmm, probably not, but it's fitting to have Larry Lieber contribute.

I just hope Kelly fills in more of the details on the how's and why's of Cormac's alter ego, as his sudden emergence as a super foe comes off as abrupt. What's this guy been doing up till now? Anyhow, overall the main story continues the positive trend of Kelly's run. ASM remains in good hands.
110
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
On the upside, Kelly does a fine job of making Peter's fight with Ravage connect on a personal level. Appropriate to the anniversary issue, we get flashbacks on Peter's life, from both Peter's and May's perspectives, and it works as a celebration of Spidey's endurance and of Peter's humanity.
110
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I thought it would've been interesting to not have Cormac turn out to be a super villain. The emotional trauma that he brings into Peter's life is enough on its own without making him an addition to Spidey's rogue gallery, but this is comics, so of course this is how we're going with it.
110
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This is quite the anniversary issue, one of the best of the Spidey centennials. Main story is cause for celebration with the return of Pepe Larraz. It looks gorgeous, and Joe Kelly delivers the big reveal on Cormac Crane. Honestly, I was hoping that what we get here wasn't going to be the reveal.

Great interview! I'm genuinely excited for the Midnight line. Everything I read about it makes me believe they're cooking up something legitimately cool with it.

Post Diamond, it was nice to get away from monthly sales figures. Turning comics into an endless horse race only had a negative effect on the discourse. But that's the kind of garbage that fuels sites like BC, so of course they've been happy to bring it back, in whatever half ass form they can get.
000
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
They're curiosities at best, and shouldn't be treated as true industry sales figures. It's shady business on anyone's part who pretends they are. The Wed to Fri Top 10 that BC publishes is at least a harmless snapshot of what books were hot at a sampling of stores. Anything beyond that is junk.

One thing I actually agree with Liefeld on - the sales charts we see today are bullshit. Bleeding Cool is only eager to post them because they want the easy clicks, but these charts in the post Diamond Comics age are useless in terms of reliable information. bleedingcool.com/comics/fanbo...

Ewing's Thor continues to be one of the best current runs in comics. Some fans may be impatient about Thor's ongoing absence, but I'm loving the journey that Ewing's put Sigurd Jarlson on, and the deliberate pace with which he's unfolding this saga. And Pasqual Ferry's art has been a perfect fit.

Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The shorts that fill out this issue aren't much to write home about. They're varying degrees of just ok. However, the main story by Chip Zdarsky and Pete Woods is an absolute gem, well worth the cover price on its own. Laugh out loud funny, with some inspired Marvel and Muppett pairings. Loved it.
000
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Plotwise, this issue delivers more of the grand silliness that this run has trafficked in from the start. Wonderful, over the top nonsense, sold with unshakable conviction. I hope it goes on forever.
000
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Whatever the case, every issue of this book is a masterclass in how to pace a comic, how to have a dense script not feel overcluttered, and how to reserve the space for dramatic beats to land as powerfully as possible. Snyder and Dragotta's instincts on this count have been infallible.
100
Jeff Allard @jallard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I wonder how much leeway Nick Dragotta has when it comes to pacing each issue, whether Snyder gives specific notes in his scripts as to how the story should play out page by page in regards to panel layout, or if he leaves those choices strictly up to Dragotta. I'm guessing it's Dragotta's call.
