Google Maps is often bizarre. Before I tapped the 35 min route it gave the 43 min route as best, given the 35 route is shorter in time/distance, has fewer hills & doesn't involve a long stretch of Sandy Beach! Clearly the better route. Who followed the "best route" last year? To the beach (at least)

Flogged into the ground again, best a Curlew Sand & a flight only stint sp. Saw a small long -winged bird briefly twice, perhaps a WRS, but adult not the juv there. A Whooper Swan was the first I've seen in Ireland since the early 80's. Loads of waders to soft through, excellent views of most 16spp

Flogged myself into the ground today for a pair of Egyptian Geese and a Clouded Yellows, both additions to species seen in Ireland, lots of waders but nothing scarce let alone rare. Lady's Island Lake and the Southern end of Tacumshin

In Ireland for my now annual trip to the SE Corner of Ireland. Probably a more inane import than coals to Newcastle, a cooked dinner to Ireland! Tacumshin and Lady's Island tomorrow. Hoping for a find or two???

Visit to Kenfig today, couldn't find anything in the bushes or on the pool but above, a few Red Kite, a possible Marsh Harrier, two Sprawks and a handful of Jays. Glorious wander, one way or another

It is almost one in 3 in Wales with the majority English born, it's like we don't exist. Even small things hide us. The WRU previously criticised for problems with inclusion used to run a campaign with the tagline 3 Million Voices raised as one. I don't think so. Another time there was a media

Nice visit to Slimbridge yesterday 5 Spot Reds, 4 Greenshank, Wood Sand, Numerous Ruff one a white-headed male, Cattle Egrets The most interesting a Corm repeatedly trying to swallow a big eel, at one stage it was trying head first, another corm tail first. The eel didn't get eaten, did it survive??

Currently driving back from Tenby, Helen driving, up ahead a line of Muppets in lorries are driving nose-to-tail repeatedly braking as they have no other way to alter their speed, Helen has a gap, fuckwits keep overtaking and filling gap so they can play the nose-to-tail game. Why???

St Govan's Head, very gentle breeze - highlights GN Diver (W) RT Diver (E), 3 Dabblers (W) ? Pintail, 2 Teal (E) with one of the small flocks of Scoter (E & W). A scattered small pod of occasionally breaching Commons. Albas, Linnets, Mippits landing on the tip coming in-off. Two single Jays. Quality

Nice enough trip to Goldcliff lagoons this morning, duck numbers much increased since last week. Not a single wafer smaller than a Knot. 5 Ruff amongst Black Tailed Godwits the stand out birds. Regular Clouded Yellows the other points of interest.

Here is something I don't give a shit about, Domestic Cat DNA in Scottish Wild Cats. A moronic waste of money that reinforces the importance of genetic purity and the indigenous population. I wonder what fundamentalist ideology underpins that set of beliefs??

Excellent watch at Strumble, just two of us for the first hour or so, birds were pouring SW so fast, in such numbers that it was bewildering and almost impossible to pick anything out of interest. An excellent Sooty, numbers of Arctic Skuas adding to the chaos, a single perplexing Petrel that might

Goldcliff over the high tide, a dearth of interesting waders, hardly any small waders, I'm assuming a complete lack of food, despite water and muddy edges. It was worth going for immaculate views of close Snipe in perfectly lit by full sun and regularly sighting of Clouded Yellows

Where to look for the first two hours this morning, Sabs to the left of us, Sabs to the right of us, into the valley of Sabs flew the Leaches Petrels, Balearics, Arctic Skuas & Little Gulls. Then the winds dropped & it becalmed, a pulse of birds around 11 produced the same species in smaller numbers

Wilson's Petrel off Strumble, 1 of my most wanted, no tick as not good enough views to personally discount Maderian, good enough to discount Storm & Leaches. Also a close Leaches, stonking Balearics, 2 Sooties (perhaps the same bird), a number of Sabs, Arctic Skuas, 2 Dunlin. Back tomorrow

Bardsey, making use of the outdoor urinal I noticed a bird moving through the trees, 2/3rds of the way up, backlit bright sunset, one wrong-handed binocular use ensued, seen for a few seconds, mostly obscured, clearly a warbler, bigger, heavier than a phyllosc, I initially thought whitethroat as it

The 2 best experiences of the trip so far, a setting sun over Ire with exceptional visibility across the water, I realised I could watch the sun through my scope, the whole edge turned green, a shimmering halo like effect that stayed green until it went out of sight! Never seen anything like it

Today I saw a little egret at sea through bins, went to scope, an assistant warden said "I think I've got an egret". I picked up the bird, it hesitated, turned L to come ashore? It dithered then landed on the water!! I came off it thinking it was the wrong bird, it wasn't! Wrong ID or a ditch at sea

Off to Bardsey on Sat for a week. If the last couple of years are anything to go by, time for the Strumble regulars to fill their boots. For those who can't make it to Strumble next week, I recommend October 10th to 15th when I am off to Tacumshin and surroundings.

Couple of hours at Strumble with Helen, flat seas with clarity to the horizon. A handful of sightings of Common Dolphin one pod of c20 went very slowly L to R, a very, very distant group of 3 Risso's, some Harbour Porpoise & Grey Seal sightings. A distant Grey Heron L to R the best bird

Llanelli WWT yesterday, like Goldcliff a lack of water on most of the lagoons. The one with birds had two GWE, one preening, getting itself into some great positions, my brother hadn't brought his camera with him to his chagrin. Otherwise a Green Sand and a Marsh Harrier the best on view.

Bought an E-drum kit today, A 63 yr old man with zero co-ordination. sacked as a 2nd violin in year 2 of high school (only there due to of an unrequited love), sent off twice as a touch judge by pissed off refs, once with the cry "is there no-one else but this fool" Perhaps this is also beyond me.

In my back garden, in Bassaleg, the partial eclipse was one of the most fantastic things I have ever seen. The light was the exact opposite of the "Golden hour" the gulls went nuts as it approached its zenith. Helen's tortoises ran in when it got dark, came out when it lightened up. Wowser

Didn't go to Strumble today as we went to the excellent Pembroke Show at Lamphey. Being sociable was much more important than a Strumble trip. Off tomorrow morning, given the amount of optics I now plan to use I've started loading the car already

I have seen more Clouded Yellow this year than all before. Wandered up onto Trewent Head this afternoon and two fluttering about there. Nothing much offshore but gave the Swaro set up a good workout. Looks promising which isn't surprising given it cost me 6K. If only my left eye worked!!!

Off to W Wales for a week's holiday after an insanely busy year. Helen's dad is interred in St Basils cemetery, next to his favourite pub. We haven't breathed for months, hopefully we will, I'll go to Strumble for a couple of days "I must go down to the seas again to the lonely sea and the sky...."

Beautiful morning at a largely water devoid Goldcliff. A close eclipse male Garganey was a plumage I've never seen before. Two M Harrier together on the saltmarsh, 3 Juv yellow Wagtails on the seawall. A flock of 7 Bar Tailed Godwit flew in then out, one in full summer plumage.

An adult Black Headed Gull spends the winter by itself on the beach at Freshwater East, one on the beach yesterday may have been it back? Also a few Common, Med and BH Gull part of the annual smaller gull dispersal. On Trewent Head loads of butterflies including a few Painted Ladies.

Bit the bullet and paid out for a 1.7 extender, a balance rail and a professional head. I watch off Trewent Head and Outfall Lane and the birds are often miles away, too far for a fixed 35 eyepiece. Also at Stumble for birds towards the horizon and the Irish sea. Cory's here I come

Given everything about me including age, I signed up for a gentler form of motion today. It followed my joining my grandson at his sport themed last day of his "toddlers" gymnastics class where I finally paid heed to creaks and rigidity where some fluidity might have been expected.

I used to cut my lawns with a mechanical mower in the hope I was doing something to help the planet, I still don't use a strimmer but a hand scythe. Developments like this and data centres show this was pointless. Having wrecked the planet they've moved into space

I followed a couple of cycling types on Blue sky, it is very noticeable that the comments on their posts are not rammed with non-cycling types whittering on about red lights, cyclists speeding, coming close, not being insured etc, etc. Is this a feature of Bluesky demographics or settings

I cycled to work the longer way today. At 5.5 miles, that's further than most UK car trips - yet it took me just 22 minutes We urgently need to unblock and enable the millions of short active trips that are being blocked every day because of our collective car dependency. Our health depends on it
