World Athletics Ultimate Championships and to the shock of nobody another huge L for "probability in sports broadcasts", with Werro (fastest in event since early 80s) given a 73% chance of qualifying, sure enough she eased through, let me bet those odds please

From a BBC article about a 17yo playing Robert Plant at chess and well... something of a wild early pawn move from Plant here 😬

Realised I could round out the story: -City: not as good as they were -Liverpool: very much a down year

This tells the story for me: what you have to do is elevate your performance levels to that which gets you contending. Arsenal achieved that across the last 4 seasons, and as such could expect to contend and if the chips fell right, win. On this trajectory, it was likely never a case of if, but when
table of Arsenal's xG difference since 2015-16 to date showing how they fell away then recovered and became close to contending levels, eventually winning.

this has been going on for 45+ minutes, no pot since then, all the reds jammed in the corner, blocked by the black, no obvious way forward as no incentive for Allen to do anything different. Crowd is sarcastically cheering every shot, slow handclaps now. And? In a way this is peak sport.

let us not suggest local BBC news is dumbing down, but a curious angle for this story, half expecting quotes from the dog given we have a picture of it on duty, taking its job seriously

Champions League non-penalty xG for group stage this season and last by country showing England well ahead in both seasons, big drop offs season to season for Germany and Spain, improvement into 2nd for Italy and France broadly the same year to year. Just raw numbers, no adjustment for schedule

This chart was on BBC website today and obvious Q is "what happened around 2002" and the answer is an absolute classic data collection skew: there wasn't an actual spike in homicides, they just added all Harold Shipman's victims to the recorded list

Despite all the misery this man inflicted on me down the years with his goals, this is by far the deepest cut. Thierry Henry is 10 days older than me and is getting a "Lifetime Achievement" award. #old

EFL crew assemble Coventry's game against Sheff Wed has single handedly extended the scale :/
xG per game for and against on an xy chart for english championship 2025-26. Coventry look really good while Oxford, Wrexham (should sign Messi probably) less so

Ye olde xG per game chart w/various lightweight takes: 1. Arsenal is the blueprint here, 7 good games, 4 ~equal, 0 bad 2. Man City no bad games recently 3. stacking up the bad games: West Ham (but 2 good), Wolves (0 good) and Burnley (0 good) and curiously Bournemouth 4. No "good" Tottenham game :/
Premier League xy chart for xG per game, shows Arsenal profiling well, Man City and Palace, less so, Burnley, West Ham, Wolves and perhaps surprisingly Bournemouth

Said goodbye to my dad today; true story: he played drums with the Beatles then knocked them back cos he wasn't sure they'd amount to anything. Good job really else i'd not exist ha. RIP Peter Reid - he was a good guy

Chart a bit busy at this stage, but point to make is Liverpool haven't had a "bad" defensive game in the PL all season. Arsenal's xG Against is a clip lower, and they've been solid too, but just nothing given away by Liverpool, worst game was Bournemouth in Sept, 1.36 xG against #d#
Chart of each individual game xG for whole PL season by team, produced mainly to show Liverpool's robust and consistent defence

Around an hour ago I had an idea that Slot Liverpool might be an interesting matchup for Ange Tottenham, and er... I've changed my mind. That's as well as anyone has played against Tottenham this year I think :/
xG for 1st half Tottenham 0.31 v Liverpool 2.34

By contrast for 2023-24, same filter so no headers. Stark to me is difference in the volume of OGs (so forced opportunities) and throughball shots and goals. I've not watched enough to know what's different, but the outcome defo is

Hard to prescribe the solution, but this chart is all 2024-25 PL shots, but no headers. There's a huge space in front of goal that is just light on footed shots.

Sometimes it can be so simple; Rashford's PL shot locations this season here, yet today he bombs through the centre to get on the end of a cross

ngl was mostly curious about Mbappe
finishing "snakes" showing how players finishing fluctuates across 50 shot samples. Lewandowski and Mbappe both have long term variable outputs, with the highs higher than the lows, Lewa is on a high currently, Mbappe a low. Vinicius Junior and Raphinha also shown, neither seems specifically a plus finisher over time, but again, all is variable, such is finishing.

Your (current) PL top scorers. Long term top flight finishing trends. Chris Wood has been hot for a while, wasn't always. Mbuemo chart, intriguing trajectory albeit comparatively short career at top level
Finishing "snakes" that show how players score vs xG over time, covering the top scorers in the PL this season. Mo Salah has a highly variable long career that is trending slightly downwards, Erling Haaland spends more time above the average line than not, but has cooled after a fast start to 2024-25, Chris Wood did not appear to be a "good" finisher until more recently in which he has been hot, and has been for a while. Bryan Mbuemo has trended generally up across a short-ish PL career. None of this is to forecast what these players may do in the future, but is interesting to visualise and tell a story around how variable finishing rates can be.

I hear people are harking for a former time 😎
PDO is an old ice hockey metric that causes extreme reactions in some people when used in soccer, as it smooshes together shot conversion and save % as a kinda ready reckoner "luck" metric and was used in the early days of soccer analytics. This chart shows that Chelsea and Liverpool are currently scoring "well", Palace and Everton less so
