i would say the most obnoxious part of this whole experience is dealing with the small bitwidth integers and slapping together fixed-point math

i dont think i really realized how easy whipping up a little state machine in C is. too abstraction-brained

tbh c is pretty pleasant if you are not doing any dynamic memory stuff. dont think i could have implemented any of this much faster in a higher level language

lmao. this is presented as a reason why you SHOULD believe DHH's opinions on software
…we end up with a backend that requires 99% less CPU, 95% less memory, and the only reason it needs 10 hosts is for redundancy. In fact, our back-of-the-envelope calculation has led us to believe that Hey’s peak traffic could probably be served on a single Raspberry Pi.

why is this not true of, say, some random book they ingested (which has no notion of "did chatgpt do a good job or not)? is this a difference in the needs of data used for pretraining vs. RL?

i think you could reasonably guess the prompts just go in their big vat of "text we believe to be human written," never to be read by a real person? upon reflection that would obviously be much less valuable than a subjective evaluation of how the model did but i don't think it's implausible

But in this internet subculture, saying completely insane and ridiculous things like this really is considered a form of being smart. It’s a display of pure rationality. You crunched the numbers and, sorry if it shocks or offends, but here are the results. Don’t like it? Take it up with Bayes.

god i love it. people hating it, people loving it, people hating loving it, people loving hating it, people hating people loving it, people hating people hating it, people proudly indifferent but making a point of saying it, etc. this is what being online is about. this is the town square

I’m not the first person to make this observation but the prevalence of nauseating ai-generated business logos means stuff like this hits CRAZY for me now

I think all I really want to say is... 3D games can have style. Realism and enhanced detail isn't always the most interesting approach.

the thing i was really impressed with was the camera, sm64's camera is famously kind of a mess and yet i had close to zero issues with oot's

Justin @jaffray.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
the thing about oot is that the original feels shockingly modern even today so i sort of get the impulse to not really reimagine it too much beyond "tighten up the graphics" but also. you can just go play the original right now

this is something else, i think once you close over something it retroactively gets boxed in a way that doesn’t work with switch. unless that’s kind of the same thing ig

i just mean thinking about a move for hours is strictly better than thinking about it for a couple minutes. there's no reason not to do that except it's boring to play that way
020
Justin @jaffray.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
i guess like of "develop tools to convince yourself that you've definitely made the optimal play" vs. "develop heuristics to generate pretty good plays in a short amount of time" i think the latter is more engaging

Justin @jaffray.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
ive been trying to work out my thoughts that games like wordle are fundamentally broken without a timer because "think for a really long time" is just too overpowered as a strategy. but a timer forgives so many sins of that sort

i think a lot about the thing @flantz.bsky.social said (somewhere) that goes like, well, what would we do, you and i, if we were playing a video game that was a perfect simulation of reality? i suppose we might go find a place in it to sit down and play checkers or tetris or something
