This is helpful, esp. for anyone new to peer review. "If you think the topic is not worthy of study, you should decline to do the review" Exactly! It can be helpful to remember that editors don't send it out if it doesn't have any chance of getting published. tl;dr: don't be a jerk when reviewing!

Was looking thru my 2011 MA thesis on #codeswitching & noticed something... Each excerpt is 4 lines: Line 1 is the utterance; Line 2 is the gloss, Line 3 is English. Line 4 is paraling info. Lines 1-3 are in the same font, line 3 is in italics and Line 4 is .... wait for it.... in Comic Sans. 😅

This term I’m teaching 2 courses on #Japanese #sociolinguistics. On the 1st day I asked students to tell me what questions they have. One asked “What problem does sociolinguistics solve?” I’ll definitely be asking them this at the mid-point & again at the end of the semester! How would you answer?

There are definitely arguments for making linguistics a standalone dept. But having linguists in depts w/ non-linguist colleagues also has lots of benefits. I do Japanese sociolinguistics and I’m in dept of East Asian Languages & Cultures, w/ colleagues across disciplines, and it’s really great!

The problem is, whoever is doing the fact checking has to know enough to spot any errors. If I'm hiring a lawyer, it's because I don't know enough to do it myself, so I'm less likely to be able to successfully fact check, or error-check, the AI output.

Ugh, so now if I hire lawyer, I’m going to also have to figure out a way to ensure that they themselves read (& write) all the stuff I would be hiring them to read (& write), not farm *any* of it out to AI. I can screw up with AI on my own, if I’m hiring a human, I want the human to do it.

This is (unintentionally I assume) an argument for serif fonts. On my phone, the main different b/w kuchi & ro is size. On my computer, you can see the serifs, so one is clearly kanji &the other clearly katakana. Using MSWord, compare MS Mincho w/ MS Gothic or ud digi kyokasho & see the differences

Here's what I'm reading this morning. Among other important points the author makes, I like this one in particular: ""writing isn’t really something you learn or teach—it’s something you practice" Nnext we need the #languagelearning version of this article. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

What else would I have written? “learner-learner interaction” or “learner-to-learner interaction”? Ok wait, I take that back. 同士 is shorter and faster to write than “to-learner” So is that it then? It was easier for me to write 同士 and that motivated the codeswitch? I don’t know, 5/

Here you see #language #variation but not social interaction, so I would still group it w #sociolinguistics and of course #appliedlinguistics broadly defined. Oh and re code-switching motivated by cognitive burden, that explanation doesn’t quite make sense here, I think. Because 4/

These were notes I wrote for myself, which I was writing in response to an English-medium webinar (subject wasn’t Japanese). Interesting to think about what motivates that kind of #codeswitching. Also brings to mind the debate about what counts as #sociolinguistics 3/

I know there’s a fair amt of research on written code-switching, but the work I’m familiar w focuses on written interaction, e.g., chat or online contexts, IOW interlocutors interacting. 2/

Was looking thru notes I took while listening to an English-lang. webinar and saw that I wrote “learner 同士のinteraction.” I don’t have any recollection of #code-switching and I doubt I would have done this if I were typing (bc of the extra step required to switch input method). 1/ #appliedlinguistics

I agree. “Lackadaisical” doesn’t exist in my spoken lexicon. “Laxadaisical” does, altho I ever explicitly think to spell it that way. Like February. & also 雰囲気 in Japanese (dictionaries say pronunciation is “fun-i-ki,” common spoken pronunciation is “fu-in-ki”) Prescriptivism is irrelevant.
