Lots of great questions tonight about how leaders can better support remote teams, personal superpowers and growth areas, and overcoming resistance to change #sydtechleaders

Having my first IV on Wednesday after my levels went down even further in the 3 months I was on tablets. Fibroids suck.

Ooh, what is this, precious?

Can confirm that conference karaoke is a fun way to network, and as a former Barbershop/Sweet Adelines singer, it would be a great blast from the past to try some tags too! Hayley’s 30 posts in 30 days is going strong, and I’m looking forward to what’s coming up!

Becky Chambers does some lovely and nice books too!

One of the coolest and most frustrating things I did was play Star Trek Online with an extension so my iPad and iPhone were the control panels. I realised that it makes much more sense when you’re captain OR weapons officer, but I was either controlling the ship OR looking where I was flying it😂

Work uses Figjam boards for project inceptions, sticky notes which can then be copied, converted, or combined later into Jira tickets.

You may also appreciate the work of @garethcoker.bsky.social particularly the Ori series of game soundtracks - beautifully sweeping and emotional, particularly “Restoring the Light, Facing the Dark”!

My brother had a period of time where he watched Thomas the Tank Engine (Ringo Starr), Back to the Future, and Bush Tucker Man on repeat, and spent a lot of time with our Novocastrian grandfather. The wild mix of accents he was coming out with was something else! No official diagnosis but suspected.

Next time gadget! Also next time I might be braver and actually promote myself 🙃

Thank you! I really appreciated your talk “Intro to JSON:API” (starting around 1:02 in the same video!) - always helpful to hear the good, bad, and ugly of a lived experience with a package, to being my expectations to a more realistic level for when I get to try it out!

Another new thing in the bag for 2024: my first meetup talk “Intro To Glue Work” at the Sydney PHP/Laravel meetup! Thanks to @whereistanya.bsky.social for articulating the original concept so brilliantly, and inspiring me to get out there and (hopefully) do it justice! youtu.be/cc4N2TyXAKI?...

Inspired by @justinjackson.ca’s Laravel starter pack, I’ve thrown together one of Australian Laravel folks! Keep in touch with some local people sharing your affinity for the Laravel framework, between Laracons. Missed people? Let me know! go.bsky.app/NNFmHx1

Had a lovely chat with one my colleagues at our Christmas party about psychological safety, as David Hicking spoke about in his @laracon.au talk “You’re a Problem Solver”. It’s something I haven’t always experienced, and that makes it all the more precious when I work somewhere it is cultivated 🥰

Lap swimming can be a great way to practice mental stuff, be it poetry, music, or presentations! I’m out of practice and needing to save the $ atm, but loved laps when I was last doing them.

I’m in the middle of reconfiguring what that looks like, but yarn, books, and a Magnum Double Starchaser have been pretty good standbys.

Learnings 2: - Don't call your model "Event" unless you like always having to alias your class and fighting with autocomplete. - Deleting and starting again might seem like wasted work, but it makes you do it better the subsequent times. - Try both the CLI and the GUI, you may get different results.

Jade Edward @jadeedward.bsky.social · 16/11/2024

Learnings - Video is not my usual educational format, so I'm pausing and rewatching lots. - Unless you're watching a tutorial very soon after publishing, you'll need to troubleshoot changes/drift in the material. - Using fresh things forces me to slow down and not rely on muscle memory so much.

12 hours later, and I have... 📚 Completed "Let's Build a SaaS in Laravel" Lessons 1, 2, and 4 (will do 3 later) 🔏 Set up commit signing in GitHub using a GPG Key ✅ Got GitHub Actions working and passing 👩‍💻 Used git push --force more times than is likely necessary (🤫 it's only me for now ok? 🫥)

Working on a little starter pack of Laravel Community members who aren't primarily Laravel Developers. If I've missed anyone obvious please let me know! If I added you to the starter pack and you're like "hey screw you I totally am a Laravel dev" also let me know! go.bsky.app/FNCmkUa

My path to dev started as a homeschooler with access to technology, but my interests lay in the arts. My HSC subjects were Music, Drama, Dance, Advanced and Extension English, and a Entertainment Industry Cert I. Most of my major works involved video editing, and I tinkered with GeoCities for fun.

I've been in dev since 2007, and nearly every project I've worked on has been started by someone else, and I've joined later. Somehow I've internalised the concept that ideas, business plans, choice of framework, initial commits - those were things other people did - not me. That's changing now.

The wonderful people I got to know better this year at @laracon.au have inspired me to bring some of that practice to a broader spotlight, even though it has me quaking in my boots. Thank you @jominney.bsky.social, @hayleybech.bsky.social, @marty.friedel.au, @jackskinner.bsky.social & @mitchdav.is 🫶

At work I create weekly blogs - task checklists, learnings, troubleshooting, code snippets etc. I often find myself referring back to them for reviews and reference, and colleagues who're interested can see them too. It's part of how I model learning in public, asking questions, and being human.

I have an idea to build something. Knowing what I do about myself, I need to manage my time, focus, and task list to do it. I’m a fan of kanban, BuJo, issue tags in commits, and flexible time handling. What do you use to manage yourself/personal software development projects on a small budget?
