The closer they got, the more the cavern began to smell sharply of spice, lotuses, and alpha. This was a pleasing scent this time, not as aggressive as earlier.

Sitting before what seemed to be a large pool of water dyed blood red was Wei Wuxian. Torches had been set in a circle through the room, making shadows dance all along his figure. Spread across the floor was a large blanket made of heavy cloth and furs. Lan Wangji hesitantly spoke to him first.

“Yiling Patriarch?” he uttered.

Wei Wuxian looked up, tired eyes watching him. He huffed and smiled lazily.

“Hah, you won’t even call me by my name anymore, Lan Zhan?” he teased. Lan Wangji winced at that.

“Your title has become you. I did not know…I wasn’t sure if I was worthy of calling you by name anymore.”

Wei Wuxian softened a bit. “You are always welcome to call me by my birth name. I also extend that to your brother.”

Summary: The scars of the Sunshot Campaign should have been the final wound. Yet, fear ran rampant through the Jianghu, and the Yiling Patriarch who was once an ally now threatened their newfound peace. Jin Guangshan offered a deliciously conniving plan that he thought could appease the man.

He sent two beautiful unmated omegas to Wei Wuxian’s doorsteps. Little did he know, he’d also given those same two sacrifices a viable alpha, one that both brothers desired as their mate.

He drowned in the lake of his mind, limbs too numb to even try to swim. The light of his world washed away leaving old sores on his conscious. He had no choice but to seal them away. He sought reverence like a starving man given a single nut to grind between his teeth or a parched soul who’d found a single dewdrop on a leaf.

His regrets would not bring back the dead. He knew that fact deep down, yet some part of him still wanted to survive. Nothing bade him to die, thus he bypassed his sacrifices any longer. The poor little lamb no longer quivered before a lifetime of being preyed on. In the past year, Lan Xichen had long shed his skin and been reborn as a wolf. He was ready to stake his claim on the one who remained.

Summary: In the crook of Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen falls under the duress of his years crashing onto his back. Yet as his body lingers like rotting meat, his soul renews itself, and suddenly, Lan Xichen is ready to face the world again.

This time, he won’t hesitate to bite down on the one he holds dear and never let him go.

Summary: "His hollow cheeks swell with air and click in fleeting pulses. His notes echo staccato tones, and languishing melodies return with correspondence full of yearning temptation. Wangji’s heart stirs in the rafters when the doors creak open.

He licks his lips as the ghostly appearance of his brother silently drifts into the abandoned theater. Xichen strides through the aisle, the bioluminescent glow of the moonflowers casting shadows along pale robes. The soothing summer night calls him in allure. Vines climb up the old seats, tracing ornate walls and dancing onto the stage."

Xichen tracks the bat yao with relentless determination into the summer night. With nothing left in his arsenal, he uses himself as bait to lure the other out. Little does he know, he's walked right into the heart of the beast's trap. Wangji has little restraint left when he lays eyes on his brother. Hunger and love drive him to taste and mark. Despite Xichen's struggles, Wangji craves to claim, and he will do exactly that with the moonflowers as his witness.

Even then, their game is still alive.

"You are worried about the trial," Xichen murmured and drew him into his embrace. "Don't be. I promise I won't end up like fugin."
Wangji placed the pot to the side and pressed his face to Xichen's chest. How could he promise such a thing? Their father had been just as strong as Xichen, had been just as much of a rising star in the cultivation world, and yet, he had never been the same after his sect leader trial, slowly losing his mind until he couldn't recognize his own children. "You don't know that."
"Have I ever broken a promise I made to you?"
Wangji said nothing. Xichen would have to face his most insidious inner conflict to ensure it wouldn't be his downfall at a critical moment. After countless hours spent reading records of former sect leaders, all Wangji knew for certain was that the trial was different for everyone and that no one had known the depths of their subconscious as well as they had thought.
"It's almost midnight," Xichen whispered.

He remembers A-Zhan, on his knees in the snow in front of the Gentian House, every night for months on end. Uncle doesn’t have the heart to punish him, but he gets impatient and annoyed the longer it’s going on, aggravated by a six-year-old who can’t seem to grasp the meaning of *Do not grieve in excess*.

Xichen comes to find him there every night, sits with him a while, then picks him up, and carries him on his back to his own room. There, he’d warm A-Zhan up as best he can, pushing qi into his chilled body, wrapping him in a thick woolen cloak. He’d hold his hand and tell him stories, fables and myths, and accounts of night hunts, and in-between, he’d feed his little brother soup, and medicinal tea, and pieces of fruit.

Xichen had gotten really proficient with heating talismans that year.

"So it was you crying for us, hmm?" He admired the plumpest of cheeks and golden eyes. The newborn paused for a moment, as if caught in a moment of recognition. Jin Rulan raised his chubby hand, seizing hold of Jiang Cheng's nose. Small coos filled the atmosphere as the Master's icy exterior melted in unrestrained adoration for his nephew. Little Jin Rulan whined stubbornly at the noise. Jiang Cheng shook his head without a care for anyone else, gently kissing the newborn's forehead.
"Not even a day old and you're already telling everyone off. How about we go somewhere a little quieter?"

Wangji breathed in and out slowly, letting the scent of his brother's incense fill him with calm.
Xichen's fingers were warm and heavy on the nape of his neck.
"Breathe, Wangji," he instructed, and Wangji tuned out everything that wasn't the command that Xichen had just given him.
"Now tell me: Red or Blue?" he asked.
Wangji took in another breath. Held it in his lungs for a heartbeat.
"Blue," he answered.
"Good. Now: Silk Rope or Ribbon?"
Another breath, held for a heartbeat.
"Silk Rope," he answered.
"Good boy," Xichen praised, and something battered and small in Wangji relaxed in time with Xichen's thumb moving gently across the soft skin of his neck.
"Stay. Keep your eyes closed," Xichen instructed, and Wangji took another deep breath as he obeyed.
Incense swirled in the air. Xichen's footsteps were quiet even in the silence of the Hanshi.

it turned out, it wasn't just one slash of the discipline whip.
"Thirty-three??' Xichen demanded. "You said that this was not an execution!"
"It is not," one of the elders said. "He is a strong cultivator. He will survive."
"Perhaps barely!" Xichen argued. "No, I forbid it. He will have three slashes, maximum."
"Thirty-three," the elder replied, steadfast. "And you will be the one to administer them, Zewu-Jun. You have been awfully defensive of this criminal. Brother or not, he betrayed your clan and laid his sword upon them. Show us that you understand the gravity of his actions."
Xichen swallowed. He realized then that the power he thought he'd had was just a farce. He was just as much on the stand as his brother was.
If he wanted to have Wangji... he would have to do this.

Lan Zhan's last thread of reason snapped in the face of unanticipated, overwhelming joy, roaring through him more fiercely than a bonfire. He seized Lan Huan by the wrist holding that beautiful bouquet and dragged him forward, letting him stumble only a moment until they were flush.

"Gege," Lan Zhan growled, and claimed his lips with a kiss. Just a press of lips, affection only given -it remained to be seen whether it would be received or not. He pulled back, eyelashes fluttering as he drank in his brother.

Lan Huan looked almost like he'd seen a ghost for a moment, but it was only a moment before his expression schooled into something calmer, more serious. He stared Lan Zhan in the eye, and asked, "Are you sure?"

Lan Zhan nodded, more sure of this than anything else in his entire life.

"Then do it again, didi."

For all that Lan Wangji wishes to collapse at that moment, it is Lan Xichen bound and tied at his side that keeps him from falling, his own back straight and regal. If his xiongzhang, even now, even with robes singed and bloodied, can keep his head held high, then so can Lan Wangji. He thinks, too, tethered as they are together, if he were to fall now, Lan Xichen would go with him.

A large fire in the center of the clearing is erected from one tired blink of his eyes to the next. It burns hot and bright, a towering flame that chases away the chill of the night. How arrogant, these Wen, Lan Wangji thinks. So confident in their strength that they care not if anyone were to see their beacon-like flame. Who could challenge them now?
