I would still rather listen (podcast, audiobook, etc.) or just read. I also absolutely hate video instructions unless for something like sewing or knitting where the movement helps.

I'm the opposite. I find the fire hose nature of short-form video means that even when it's impactful to me in the moment, I have zero recall. It's like my brain puts it in the trash immediately.

It really seems clear that this was about real estate development, not the budget. The same was true about Duke's herbarium.

In the last couple of years, we've seen multiple critical collections (museums, herbaria) close. The IUCN--the global authority on the status of biodiversity--recently published on how important these kinds of facilities are in conservation. Every day, the dead are working to protect the living.

This is gutting. Sternberg is one of the most important paleontology museums in the country. MUSEUMS SHOULD BE LAST ON THE LIST TO CLOSE, NOT FIRST. What kind of world do we want to live in? Because running the country -- and universities -- like businesses and not a public good is what got us here.

Are you a postdoc or new faculty member who would benefit from an invited talk? My department is looking to bring someone for spring. Due to budgetary reasons, you must be either: 1. In driving distance to Orono, ME OR 2. Working on alpine or Arctic plants

I'm not referring to the scientific method here. A lot of new graduate students don't yet know how publishing works, or things like data management, reference management, grants, etc.

Early career folks and current (or future!) grad students: I'm teaching our Professionalism course in spring and mixing things up a bit based on feedback from students in our grad programs. Would this description make you want to take this class, especially as a first-year student?
"This course explores how to build a thoughtful, effective, and sustainable career in the biological sciences. Topics range from how science works—asking good questions, evaluating evidence, and cultivating curiosity and open-mindedness—to the practical skills of conducting, managing, communicating, and publishing research. Students will develop strategies for navigating scientific careers, including collaboration, writing and presenting, job searches, resilience, work-life balance, and handling rejection and uncertainty. The course also addresses research ethics, reproducibility, data stewardship, and other principles of responsible scientific practice, and fulfills the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirement."

Thank you! Right now, we’re having trouble finding many. I have a list of about six that seem to happen reliably still. A lot of museum websites haven’t updates since 2025, which I suspect is because of funding. Some REUs seem to no longer exist. It’s tough out there.

I have big pots on my front steps and squirrels were a menace. What finally worked for me was just putting some big rocks on the exposed parts of the soil (flat, round, didn't matter). The water still flowed around the rocks into the soil; squirrels couldn't lift rocks, so gave up.

It feels like we do not yet have an intersectional feminist movement that has coalesced to meet the needs of this moment. I can't think of a better reason for cross-generational solidarity than the fact that we need experience AND energy at the table. We need perspective AND time and resources.

But that doesn't mean that we get to give up. So I'm extremely grateful to the elders who are lending their expertise, and the youth who keep showing up with energy and ideas, and the sandwich generation folks who feel like we're holding it together at both ends -- we're stronger together.

And before anyone comes at me: I turn 46 this year. I did not expend to have fewer rights than when I was born. I did not expect that most of the work I've devoted my life to: science, climate change, feminism, antiracism -- are in a worse place than when I started. Backlash is real and it sucks.
