Waiting on updates on two upcoming leg surgeries (will know next week), today has been alright. Work promotion was nice & celebrated with kiddo. Arthritis sucks. But whatever. Trying not to read world news. Hope life is treating you softly.

Harbour Square in Toronto reminds me of the Barbican Centre in London, England (which also houses Riman ruins), in its brutalism and greenery around it. The Barbican continues to fascinate me as I read about the many things I didn't get to see while in there.

Sorry, I am in between 3 appointments today before I pick up kiddo, and I found this passage interesting after my Europe trip, cuz it's always in the back of my brain when I'm back home in Toronto.

My Hometown
We travel great distances to gawk at the ruins of once-great civ ilizations, but where are the contemporary ruins? Where in our world are the ruins in progress? Where are the once-great cities that are now gradually being abandoned and are slowly crum- bling, leaving hints of what people from the future will dig up and find a thousand years from now?
I am on a train passing through Baltimore, where I grew up. I can see vacant lots, charred remains of burned buildings sur- rounded by rubbish, billboards advertising churches, and other billboards for DNA testing of children's paternity. Johns Hop- kins Hospital looms out of the squalor. The hospital is on an isolated island situated slightly east of downtown. The down- town area is separated from the hospital complex by a sea of

David Byrne's Bicycle Diaries during my kiddo commute. His perceptions of cities are incredibly inciteful. Relate to his love of exploration by feeling lived in a city through its transport and accessibility. I love this book. I am very much anti-car, at least as in they chop up cities.

When in Amsterdam.....I bruised a rib in a nasty fall before my trip while vacuuming, no less. We went into the "coffee shop" here and they gave me some medicine. I rarely have ever had a joint, don't smoke, but it eased my pain for a while. Having fun while healing up.

Amsterdam buildings are so intricate and amazing.

Interesting article in The Atlantic "The Dark Side of Mindfulness" web.archive.org/web/20260905... I think anyone in meditation should think about it. Key point: stay fucking grounded. We are all equally human.

"But I also came across some teachings that I did appreciate, and which I’m going to oversimplify here because I’m not a Buddhist. Among them: The Buddha taught that people should pursue a “middle way” between decadent indulgence and rigid austerity—to not live mindlessly, but to not be so ascetic as to immiserate yourself. “Avoiding these two extremes,” one sutta reads, “the Realized One understood the middle way of practice.” Maybe he was onto something."
