Beach art, part 2! See alt text for my initial thoughts on “urban” sketching. Cliffnotes: 🎨Changing scene + limited setup are difficult but got me out of my comfort zone 🎨 Cool way to immerse yourself in a scene and create a momento 🎨 Mixed feelings on being perceived while creating
Woman (me) sketching with colored pencils on a beach in Mexico

Initial thoughts on “urban” sketching: It’s as hard as I expected in all the ways I expected: The light changes with the movement of clouds and the sun. The waves are of course constantly moving. And I didn’t have as elaborate of a setup as I normally do.

It was fun though! I experimented with a different medium than usual, colored pencils, since they’re a little easier to handle than paints without a large surface to work with. It’s kind of like taking a photo but better—you’re capturing a little time lapse rendition of a scene you’re in as a memento you can take with you.

The beach spot was also fairly private—my partner took this photo—but I find that I personally don’t really like the feeling of being perceived, especially by strangers, when I’m making art. I did another colored pencil drawing on the plane (will share later) and I had to turn the little spotlight on and couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched over my shoulder. Maybe it’s something you get used to? No one approached me any of the times, and I was equally relieved and offended, lol. #Drawing for #MakersMArtch. The best drawing advice I’ve gotten: 1. Everything is shapes and lines. Including… 2. Negative space. (The shapes between the shapes.) Don’t say, “I can’t draw XX” (mine was mouths), because that, too, is just shapes and lines. What’s your best tip? #drawing #drawingtips

An oldie but goodie. I painted this #crowded beach scene for Father’s Day 2 years ago when I’d just started painting. I think I did a good job but every part of this was a learning experience (see alt texts for details). #MarchIntoLandscapes #landscape #watercolor #art #BlueSkyArtShow
Painting of a childhood family beach day in Maine, USA. A dad and his young daughter (me) and son in the foreground with a crowded beach scene in the background.

Even doing the flat wash behind us was difficult and took a lot of concentration. I remember thinking a constant mantra of “keep your leading edge wet!” I wasn’t using 100% cotton paper yet and didn’t have a lot of experience, so this was harder than it sounds. I studied videos of landscapes to find out I should keep the greenery in the background soft and keep the people in the background as blocked out shapes void of too much detail, because that’s how we see things far away. Painting of a childhood family beach day in Maine, USA.

What I loved most about painting this was deciding to be unafraid to add a little extra pigment in my shadows to keep a nostalgic feel and paint what I saw and found most beautiful about the photo (besides the family memories). I loved practicing glazing to warm up the skin tones (children were tan in the 90s 😂) and contrast with the blue-green shadows. I struggled so hard with my own face which I swear was just slightly cuter than this. Kids faces are surprisingly hard for me, I think because they just have fewer planes and wrinkles to guide you. And “drawing what you see” when it comes to your own face (or people close to you) can be so loaded so it’s much harder to stay objective. Sometimes after I paint someone, I’m like you have no idea how much I know about your face because I spent so much time studying it just to make it not look like a stranger’s. Weird painting stuff! Thanks for attending my nerd sesh. 🤓

Then I used a wood burning tool to trace the graphite.
